For those who have been, what's the real scoop with bringing friends/family to events. The web site is vague about it so it's not clear which events are the ones where they encourage you to invite friends or family and which ones are student only. Obviously, things like find your classes, campus tours, etc. are clearly just for students but what about things like movie night? The kick-off? The latter is required and I really would not want to go alone.

The assumption is that you will not bring any non-UW students to any of the events for Dawg Daze. However, I do not believe there are any definite restrictions. Although, for the kickoff, you definitely do not want to bring family because it is an event in which the entire freshman class is held in the Dempsey Indoor Field, and you do a bunch of stuff to meet other students. The same can be said for the movie-night in the quad; there will only be students at such events.

Thanks, that’s very helpful! What about the midnight carnival?

The Midnight Carnival is the same night as the Quad Flicks. Regardless, it is the same as all the events during Dawg Daze. It is for UW students only! Take this opportunity to meet as many Huskies as you can. Most of the student body is in good spirits (as you can assume at this time of the year), so take advantage of that, and make some new friends. Trust me, you won’t have another great opportunity to meet a lot of students (freshman-senior) in the following quarters like what you will see in the coming weeks. Everyone is excited/nervous for the new school year, so try to match the level of emotion, and you will bond with other students in no time! For gosh sakes, I am excited/nervous for the new year, and this is going to be my second year at the UW.

Thanks again, mochiman. It sounds like these events are more Freshman-oriented. I imagine if I was a traditional Freshman and especially if I lived in a dorm and hooked up with dormmates it would be fun. But, as a non-traditional, transfer and a commuter, I suspect I’d feel woefully out of place going alone. So, I will stick to the more informational type events. I’m glad to hear that it’s still exciting in your second year! :)

I’m in the same boat as you PrincipessaAnna. I want to go to the Quad Flicks and check out the midnight carnival, but not only am I a transfer and commuter, I’m 26, so I feel like I’ll be older than everyone. I wanted to go and bring a friend but I think we’re just gonna find something else to do that night.

I do plan on checking out the commuter fair though, for sure.

There are other things to do. I highly recommend attending the Fall Fling, Student Activities Fair, and even the late night stopping at Fred Meyer. The Fall Fling is an all-day concert held by the UW for not just all UW students, but also faculty. It can be fun for anyone. You can even bring friends if you want; they don’t check student ID’s. The Student Activities Fair is a very good way to find out how you can be involved in the UW community outside of classes. From what I’ve been told, there are over 400 registered student organizations. Many of them participate in this activities fair, which can help get your foot in a couple doors as far as making quick connections and having some events to attend whenever you feel the need. The Fred Meyer night is special simply because the UW takes over a Fred Meyer, and the enormous amount of purple is something you’ll never get to see again in such a superstore at one time. Plus, they have discounts on everything in the store just for that event, so it’s worth going to especially if you have a few things you still need to buy before the quarter begins.
