Well…it seems most of us are waiting for boarding school admissions letters. In the meantime, do we have any day school admissions to celebrate for 2019?
In our case, my youngest DC was admitted to The Spence School! We looked at six day schools and one junior boarding school, but her absolute favorite was Spence. We are looking forward to watching her walk through those red doors this fall!
My middle child was admitted to her longtime favorite school - Horace Mann.
Youngest child will join our eldest at another day school.
Congrats @MariFeigh! The NYC admissions process is not for the faint of heart. We are happy to have all of our kids settled in after two back to back years of applications.
CTKid1 attends BS, but CTKid 2 is waiting to hear this weekend from the one and only high school he applied to, a LDS. There are a lot of reasons weighing in favor of acceptance so it’s not nearly as nerve-wracking as the first time around, but it’s a big deal for him (having attended the same school since age 3), and I know he’s nervous.
@sonatarhia did your child get into Trinity off the wait list or regular, and if you want, are you FA or FP?
My DC is on the waitlist with FA and not sure what to expect. I am starting to think fuggedaboutit!
@dogsmama1997 you said THAT right. It’s a relief to be finished with this one. We wanted St. Ann’s for our DC, but she wanted Spence. It was a bird in the hand or two in the bush sort of situation, so the struggle was real. Tomorrow we find out about boarding schools. Fingers crossed, our oldest DC gets their fav, as well.
I’m curious to know ISEE or SSAT scores for Trinity, Spence and HM acceptances. We are back for dc 2 next year and she is much stronger test taker than her sibling. Old dc had great grades but a questionable math score on ISEE that I think took her out of running for a number of schools we liked for her.
DS was waitlisted at BB&N and rejected at Rivers. I am so disappointed, he was really excited about the Conservatory (he is a very strong musician)… It’s interesting, over the years a lot of our friends’ kids applied to Rivers… They were accepted to other top schools, but none were accepted at Rivers. I am starting to think they are prejudiced against the country we are from
Re: Spence
Last year DC had 9,9,7,9. (Lower Level Exam for entering 6th grade.)
This year? Ugh. 6,7,6,7. (Middle Level Exam for entering 7th grade)
Last year, DC said the test was a breeze. This year, DC said that the format/layout for the test was a little different and she said she missed/didn’t see/didn’t answer 5…whole…questions. (Indeed, when I got the results back I could see a block of 5 questions she didn’t touch in, I think it was the Verbal Reasoning section- her strongest area.) She didn’t notice that she had skipped them until it was too late. But all’s well that ends well because she said Spence was her favorite school. Thank heaven she has a strong interview. Whatever the case, I’d say in the future make sure that any child applying is familiar with the latest version of the test. My fingers are crossed for DC2!!!
@bsmom2004 high scores can really help. I I know of one dd who got into Spence with mostly 6s (but a compelling profile for other reasons). Trinity accepted some with mixes of 8s and 9s, and one student who was admitted to all the top nyc day schools (including HM, Trinity, and top single sex) with one 8 (95th%ile) and 3 9s. Pretty sure those scores helped a lot. I also have friends with kids at HM whose scores were mixed 7,8,9s. Good luck.
Yes, my DC had that compelling profile, I guess. Fantastic recommendations from everyone. Fantastic test scores and grades for years. Public speaking awards on a state and national level. Someone said that for a kid in the sixth grade taking the Middle Level exam for the first time, 6,7,6,7 were good scores. I was skeptical. I didn’t know anything about the ISEE, so I was crestfallen over her scores dropping one year later. Then, I dug up an article on the subject and it seemed to suggest that 6’s and 7’s really weren’t as bad as I thought, LOL. (After reading it, I felt sorry that I had overreacted. )
Obviously, you want to prepare your DC to get the highest scores they can possibly attain. But here’s the article…hopefully it explains why 6’s and 7’s won’t sink your child’s ship, provided the child has a strong performance record. https://www.nyctestprepadvice.com/isee-scoring
