Does anyone know what college life is like in the District, i live in Maryland but rarely visit DC so does anyone know what college life is like?

I hear it's pretty good. It has an active nightlife and lots of fun stuff to do.

Very busy, very social, and very fun.

I've heard that DC has one of the highest crime rates in the country. I find that a little ironic. Anyone know if that's true?

Very true. Some of the worst neighborhoods in America are in the district. Case in point, the commandant of the Marine Corps house is located right across the street from a porn shop.

DC, like any city, has very nice parts, and very bad parts.
DC, like any city, has crime.

joev... having a porn shop doesn't make it a bad neighborhood, there are other things I would be much more worried about.

Anyway...
George Washington is near all the government stuff is, = nice part.
American is near Embassy row, = nice part
Georgetown is in Georgetown... tell the people buying the new $10million+ apartments it's not nice.

and of couse, it's in the city, so there's all of the city stuff to do. Bars, clubs, shows, concerts, sporting events, etc. And you won't need a car.

CITIES OF 500,000 OR MORE POPULATION: (32 cities)

Capitol Police, Secret Service, Campus Police, Metro Security, DC Police... the list goes on and on. You will be safe on campus.

Haha... I can't believe that Phoenix is more dangerous than NYC... go New York!

I live in a Phoenix suburb, and I can't believe that we're #10 either!

i'm surprised Cleveland isn't on there.

Where's Atlanta??? At least we're one of the fattest cities.......

I live right outside DC and there is quite a bit to do in the city...I've lived here practically my entire life and never run out of places to see. Georgetown can get old really quickly, but there's a) a lot of good theatre going on, with excellent student rates b)museums up the ass with new exhibits all the time c) about a zillion clubs for alt. and popular music. And you're only four hours away from NYC, three from Philly if you decide to get out for a weekend.

In response to the crime rate, it's just like any other city. Stay out of the sketchy parts and keep an eye on your stuff. I've never had anything stolen.

Atlanta seemed pretty safe when I went there..and EXTREMELY dead. The place was closed by 6...even the Starbucks closed before it got dark. I almost passed out.

I love DC! It is amazing and I'm so excited about going to college there next year. It's a beautiful city, there's GREAT shopping in Georgetown, the Smithsonian, National Gallery, Holocaust Museum, Library of Congress, etc. etc.

Cleveland would have been on there grapeful, but they dipped to 476,000 people in the last census, thusly not qualifying for the list. If they took all cities over 100,000 Gary, IN and a couple of jersey towns would have been ranked in the top ten.

Being in the city will build you some street smarts, if nothing else =P. I've gone into DC zillions of times, and never had a problem. You might have to get used to the homeless people, but all cities have them, and hopefully they're kept off the campuses when possible. Stay out of the bad parts, you'll have no reason to be there.

DC is an amazing city though, there is so much to do and see, Museums galore, all of the government buildings (WH, Capitol, etc etc... the Pentagon is actually in VA,, contrary to popular belief). The monument, elipse, presidential memorials (Lincoln, Jefferson, etc), War memorials (Vietnam, WWII (just completed)). The on going joke in NOVA is that we find it amusing when other people are so excited to see all of the monuments and museums that DC has to offer, since we live so close, we get the good 'ol extra credit assignments in middle school to "go visit a museum" and such, heh.

Also the new air/space museum opened up in NOVA... you walk in, and bam:
SR-71
Space Shuttle Enterprise
also home to the Enola Gay

I didn't look at any city schools when I applied to colleges, but there will never be a shortage of entertainment, fun, and opportunities in DC.

i am so late.. lol but seeing as though i live in Baltimore, i prob wouldn't have a problem in the District, but then again i live in the suburbs.. urm.. thanks for all y'alls imput.

I go to American, and have been really happy about being in DC. I'm studying international relations and so there is a ton to do relating to my studies (as there is for political science, etc). And like most cities, there are tons of restaurants, things to do, clubs, and so on

OMG, I grew up in Richmond, CA and it's #12 on the most dangerous cities list! Richmond, apparently the most dangerous in California and the entire west coast, is 6 miles from UC Berkeley. The criteria must be number of certain crimes per capita. Richmond has a 2002 estimated population of 102k.

There are probably many lists floating around. The following website has lists for both safe and dangerous cities:

http://www.morganquitno.com/cit04pop.htm

cough That list is a sham. Everyone knows NYC and LA have some of the most dangerous places to be in. Geez. DC is a breeze compared to LA.

tlaktan

everyone knows that certain parts of a city don't make the entire city bad. So maybe you should trust the people who make these lists for a living instead of your gut, because I don't think you know what life is like in any inner city. There's neighborhoods in DC that are just as bad if not worse than LA and NYC. Who should people trust, the statistics, or your uninformed opinion?

OMG! Who in their right mind would think that Baltimore is safer than Richmond, Va. I visited JHU and stopped at a blimpies near campus, the store was encased in bullet proof glass! (I have traveled extensively across the US, including NYC, Newark, DC and many other cities on this list,) I've never been to a convience store where you had to place your money into a tiny slot in a bullet proof window, then an extremely rude counter person would rotate your sandwich and drink around to you. I was scared just standing there, couldn't wait to get back in the car and scram! That quickly changed my mind about Johns Hopkins. (Two murders and a rape in the past year, isn't cool either.) I know it's a grea school, but I didn't feel safe. On the other hand, I felt completely safe at Richmond, no bullet proof glass anywhere.
