I just got off the phone with the admissions office because the CommonApp I submitted wasn't the one that I wanted them to see (it was tailored for another school). I called them asking if I could resubmit, and the lady told me that as long as I mailed in the application by January 4 with a cover letter with identifying information and a request to disregard the other application I would be fine.

I asked why January 4? She said the deadline had been pushed back because they were a bit overwhelmed with the number of applicants. call them yourselves if you want, i'm still mailing this today but I thought I'd let you guys know.

Cool! yes I called them too. I asked to replace a Commonapp essay b/c of extenuating circumstances. They said it doesn't even need to be postmarked on Jan 2. Just send a new essay in that will get there hopefully by Jan 15 with your Commonapp ID information & your school name so its easy to identify you. Good luck everyone!

I just have to say, Duke Admissions officer= nicest lady of my life.

Just reminding those of you who are submitting the app via snail mail that Jan 4th is a Sunday - postmarked BY Jan 4th probably means you'd have to have it in by Jan 3rd since there's no postal pickup on the 4th.

I'm not surprised they pushed it back though - I think they pushed back the date my year too.

If I have one of those "supplementary letters" that a friend wrote.. when do you think that has to be postmarked? I'm thinking it doesnt' matter.

Yeah, it appeared they were padding in the wake of the LAX debacle, but this year they may in fact be "overwhelmed".

From 12/21 NYTimes Article on colleges facing dips in enrollment:

"Yale received 5,556 applications this year, 14 percent more than last year, for its nonbinding single-choice early action program, said Jeffrey Brenzel, the dean of admissions, who added that regular applications were running higher, too.

Dartmouth has more applications than ever, early and regular, as do Duke University, the University of Denver and the University of Rochester."
