Deadlines: Send in after?

GRAHHHH, I have 15 mins to send in my Pomona application, but I'M NOT DONE WITH MY "OPTIONAL WRITING SAMPLE" ESSAY. I know I can't finish it in 15 mins. Deadline is actually 1/2, but I think post offices aren't really open? I'm not sure if private services will do it. Anyone know?

Do you think it's okay if I send it later by mail?

ORRRRR (as my brother just brilliantly suggested) since I live only like an hour or so away from Pomona College, would it be okay if I just ... drop the essay off by 1/2 by driving there?

I think you've answered your own question.

it would have been easier for you to do it online.. why didn't you do it online?? online's so much better than doing it on paper...(esp for ppl with handwriting probs..etc) or.. does pomona not have online apps???..

Usually when a school says deadline it means that it is the last day that they will accept an application (not what day it is due).

Pomona states

*Students applying for first year and those who will have completed less than one academic year at another college should apply for freshman standing. Applications should be received in our office
by January 2, 2006.

Pomona cannot be responsible for internet service provider problems or postal service delivery.*

The admissions office will be closed on 1/2

*December 30 *Admissions Office closes at 3:00 pm.; office reopens on January 3. *

The school may be running with a skeleton staff.

On their website it states that the mail room is open M-F from 8 am to 8 pm.

I would suggest calling their mail room at

Phone: (909) 607-8486

Worse case, you will get some type of message stating what their hours are during winter break.

If they are open and you do go over, I would recommend
you just typing a little note with your name SS # with something like

Received by Pomona College Mailroom

and having it signed and dated (maybe even time stamped) by who every you drop it off with.

good luck

Or Use The Bloody Internet You Foolish Luddite!!! You're Using The Internet Right Now For Christsake!!

Uh. I'm doing it via Common App, and the only choice they give me is to download a PDF file and fill it out and then mail it.

Well, I guess Sybbie's suggestion is the only thing I can do. Grah, I just barely got the rest of my application through the post office. (And nearly died on the way, as my car slid and skidded due to the heavy rain here.)

Syneria

Thank Xiggi for this tip

Lines at the Post Office? Haha, that is for ... amateurs.

Jokes set aside, allow me to repeat my little strategy for meeting deadlines that requires "postmark" proofs. It is pretty simple and only involves signing up for an online account with the USPS and print your own labels. You could print your label at 1150 and deposit the forms the next business day without causing an uproar. In this case it gives you a good number of meaningful hours. The postmark will be on the package and you have the proof of mailing with the same information. All for $3.85

Also remember that financial aid numbers can be estimated and corrected later. The schools ask for completeness and accuracy and prefer to see corrected information, even if it comes a bit later -in the form of an amendment.

Lastly, as far as mailing deadlines, it is good to remember that the mail won't be processed for several days and that a little delay should not matter at all.

What is this 1150?

Is it the "Print a Shipping Label" at the top of the UPSP.com site?

Also, what about weight? I don't really have anything to measure how much my package weighs in ounches...

Are there particular label sheets I should go buy right now to print these labels?

I think he meant 11:50 p.m.

If you have a digital kitchen scale you could always weigh your package on that.

If you click through the website there are some avery label equivalents that you could use. (the site just opened another window with out providing a link)

If there is a staples or an office depot that is open in your neck of the woods (some may be open tomorrow), you could try them because they would carry labels. You could probably get some avery labels that can do the job.

:) Thanks. I have a OfficeMax right over the hill, so I can drop by there real quick tonight. Would you know what size these labels would have to be? Edit: Nm, I guess I'll just pop by and choose whatever fits my whim.

Lol, I did some googling and calculator work to figure out that one sheet of paper theoretically weighs 0.768 ounces. XD

Syneria,

Click this link:

then click

Order self adhesive labels.

it will open the following window:

<a href="http://www.labeluniverse.com%5B/url%5D">www.labeluniverse.com</a></p>

Click Product index Avery-3M cross reference

You may be able to find a comprable label listed there

good luck

I'm in your position as well. I got screwed because a) I didnt realize until recently that I couldn't submit the supplement online b) I didn't realize until recently that the supplement had a school report section c) I had no idea the deadline was "receive by" rather than "postmark by." The good thing is I will have most of my application in by 1/2 (transcript, test scores, teacher recs, counselor rec, school report, common app, app fee). If Pomona won't accept two relatively small pieces of my application a couple days late, I am apalled by their punitiveness and would rather not attend their institution. I just walked to a blue post office mailbox in the rain on New Years Eve to throw in the Supplement with my optional essay. It will be postmarked on 1/2 after 10am. I'm sure they'll take it though.

I wish I can say that... But I want Pomona more than Pomona wants me so... ;__; I can't say anything like that.

well its likely that I'm just saying that because all this college app stuff is making me a bit bitter...

well, cornell said i could apply ed 15 days late. i was rejected. so i wouldnt risk it.

no, im not bitter lol.

Hm. Wait. Even if I do Xiggi/Sybbie's way... The next business day is 1/3... And I am inferring that Pomona's app material are due BY 1/2, not postmarked by 1/2.

:o CAN I PLAY THE MAILMAN THEN? :D I'll just affix the postmark thing as 12/31 and then drive to Pomona on 1/1 or 1/2 and drop it off in their mailbox. Hee.

Or does it not work like that...

omg! Why doesnt mail get shipped on 1/2? I'm gonna have to call them on 1/3 and beg for forgiveness... :(

I have the same problem, except with U Penn. I didnt even know there was a form 6 (Financial Aid Application). What I'm going to do is say that due to the holidays and circumstances out of my control, I will be mailing them the form as soon as the post office is open. I will also fax them the form, to show them that I have filled it out in time. Think this will work?

I don't have a fax machine :(
