What are the purpose of the 1/15, 1/31, and 2/1 deadlines on applications? Do schools not accept applications after those dates? Do they give a priority to applications received before those dates? Are they more guidelines?
Hah. I don't understand.

From talking to numerous schools, this is my understanding --

In order to get admissions notification by the March 10th date, you need to have your application postmarked by the deadline.

In order to be considered in the first round of admisions decisions, you need to have your application postmarked by the deadline. If the class is filled (which is the case in most of the top ten schools) then your application will only be considered at a later time if a spot opens (or you have some very special pull).

In order to be considered for financial aid, you need to have all required paperwork in by the deadline. If you submit it after the deadline, you may be put on the waiting list for financial aid.

Does that make sense?

It does, indeed.
Thanks!!

what if the teacher recs are late? i just checked online for one of my schools. and the extracirricular teacher rec hasnt arrived yet and the deadline was 1/15. should i be worried? will i still not get a march 10 decision? thanks

Ask your teacher when s/he mailed it. The school may just not have marked it as received because they're so busy right now. Does that help?

yes, thank you!

I just found out that Deerfield is taking applications until 2/11 and they will be considered in the regular admissions cycle.

Also, I'm missing one part of my Andover application, but they said I will still get a March 10 decision.

My teacher rec supposedly never arrived at the school, even though my teacher sent it 2 months ago, and I finally was able to contact someone at the school so that she could physically search for it. After the rec wasn't found anywhere, my teacher had to redo the recommendation and fax it over to the school. I'm really worried too. Will my application be considered late because the rec didn't come on time?

Probably not. Schools are pretty flexible if you're only missing one or two parts of your application. Just call and ask them if it's okay.

They are more flexible on the parts that were out of your control -- transcripts, teacher recs, etc. They will generally hold you to the deadlines for the part you could control -- essays and student/parent parts of the application.

"I just found out that Deerfield is taking applications until 2/11 and they will be considered in the regular admissions cycle."

Wonder why? Could it be that they have received fewer apps than usual this year?

where did you hear that, Keylyme?

I was quoting Jonathan; four posts back.

Okay thanks.

Jonathan, did you call the school?

The website still says postmarked by the 15th...

I got an email from Deerfield admissions, saying:

We can accept missing application items through February 11th.

I had to ask if an interview this weekend was OK, because the interviewer that I was supposed to meet in January was sick. Deerfield admissions accepted it, and said that missing application items were accepted through Feb. 11th

Geokid08 is saying

We can accept missing application items through February 11th.

whereas Jonathan said

I think geokid is correct. Deerfield hasn't extended their application admissions deadline. They are simply stating they will accept missing pieces of an already submitted application, until 2/11.

I was looking through Deerfield's viewbook (2006) the other day and it says that they will try to give equal consideration to applications submitted before February 16. I called Deerfield the other day and asked if I could submit an application before the 16, and they said I will be considered a regular applicant if I submit it before the 11, and I will receive a March 10 decision. This is directly from the admissions office. Call if you don't believe me.

I wasn't saying I didn't believe you Jonathan. I was saying there are two different statements. geokid said his email said "we can accept missing application items until February 11th." Deerfield's website says "Jan. 15, 2008 Application deadline. Your completed application should be postmarked by this date."

Okay, I was just saying what the viewbook said and the admissions officer I spoke with on the phone.
