Dealing with college admissions failure - Seeing your friends go to Top Colleges.

Hey guys!

I am sure I am not the only one out there, but yeah what happened to me was that - I didn’t get into a Top College and all my friends did. My friends with lower scores than me got into a top college. and I didn’t.

How do you deal with this?
When everyone expects you to go to a top college, everyone expects you to go to one of the best and then you end up going to one of the worst colleges out of everyone you know and everyone else goes to Berkeley, Cornell etc.

How do you live with it?
How do you face your friends, family and yourself?

I’ve heard all the cliched stuff already btw.
“College doesn’t matter, what depends is your networking and ability to take advantage of opportunities”
“They got in now but in the future you can beat them”
“ooh… your college is nice too …”

What steps did you take to overcome this?
How did you plan out your life?
I feel it’s pointless to graduate from a second tier university.

Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks!

“I feel it’s pointless to graduate from a second tier university.”

That’s simply not true. Envy and relative level of the schools I get but you will need a degree from a university and in many fields it doesn’t matter where you graduate from. See CS and SJSU.

You don’t have to beat them either, I think thats another assumption you’re making. Finding what makes you happy is more important than getting a top tier degree.

Also, I’m guessing that the tier you got into is still plenty fine. Unless it’s outside of most rankings Top 200, it will serve will in its own ways. Not as well as the tippy top tier, but so few students go there: Do you really think that only students who go to Universities X, Y and Z can be successful and happy?

As far as facing other, stop putting your self worth in what others think. To yourself, judge yourself on what you learn / how you live.

Curious, what school do you plan to attend?

@PengsPhils what if getting into a good university is what made me happy? I took computer science as a major and hence I got rejected across the board.

I don’t love computer science enough to give a top university.

It’s not envy for me. It’s about being left out. I don’t have a problem when people who worked REALLY hard get into Good colleges. But when I see my friend who didn’t do anything all his high school career, just watched TV all day and his friend writes his essays and he gets to go to Berkeley while I end up in the tundra of Wisconsin, is just heartbreaking.

I literally broke my back working my ass off the last 4 years doing all the extracurriculars and whatnot but still I don’t get a top tier university. Makes me lose faith in the value of hard work.

The Universities I got into are plenty fine, right, but it’s not what I expected and it’s not what anybody expected of now and now I can’t face anyone and I am becoming a recluse. I don’t know what steps to take. I don’t want to graduate from a second tier university. I can’t have a second tier university as my alma mater.

I plan to attend either of these:
University of Washington, Seattle
University of Wisconsin, Madison
University of California, Irvine
Purdue University

And again, people who did much less than me got into these places as well so I don’t feel like I got what I deserved.
Life’s unfair.

It sure is frustrating when things don’t work out as planned. Right now you’re probably in shock and it must feel like the end of the world. It will pass…with time.

What do you do now? Hold your head high. Don’t let them see you cry. Find the positives in the hand you’ve been dealt (it’s there). If you say you can’t…look harder. You have approx 60 years left on this earth. Dont let this define what life has in store for you. If you give up now, you lose.

And for your friend that had someone else write his essay and supposedly slacked off…good luck to him. It will probably be 4 years of hell. Karma is a b****

I’m not going to give you those cliche lines that you’ve already heard, but I will say…UWM has a kick *** sports program! Football…Basketball…School spirit up the yin yang! Go Big 10!!! How fun is that!!! Enjoy yourself! You have the rest of your life to be serious!

@onlyrodeo Thank you so much

I will try to have a kickass time at UWM and I will try to transfer after the first year nevertheless. If I fail again, I still have a great school so I’ll just move on.

There you go! Btw…your school is in the NCAA final 4. Watch them this weekend!

@onlyrodeo Hellyeah! I will B-|

On Wisconsin!

Aaron Rodgers was originally rejected from Berkeley. They thought he wasn’t good enough to play ball for cal. He eventually transferred there but when you watch football and the starting players do the introductions he says, “Aaron Rodgers. Butte Community College!” Hahaha!!!

Yup, I understand how you feel. For example, I was rejected by 24 schools mainly because of financial issue.
Handful of my friends were accepted to top schools and it really saddened me. However I am happy in my school
