sorry. I’m literally here to rant to someone because my parents are sick of hearing it.
I didn’t get in to my dream school and I’m super upset. like if I can’t go to my dream college why waste 60k on going to college at all if I’m going to hate it.
sorry I’m just literally so upset. I feel like I’ve put so much stock into this school and seeing my under qualified friends get in feels like a slap in the face. so yes, you can say I’m clearly very upset.
I think this whole college admission process sucks and someone has to change it. so many things that I can’t control hurt my chances. I can’t help my geographic location, I can’t help that I have no “diversity.” I can’t help my socioeconomic status. I can’t help that I have no legacy.
why can 't college processes be strictly based on merit?
sorry for this rant.
I’m clearly very upset that my dream has been crumpled. I hope these admission officers realize that their jobs only crumple the dreams, hopes and lives of motivated and hardworking teens.
If I applied somewhere and didn’t get in, it was because I wasn’t going to be a good fit there. Why would I want to go someplace for 4 years that I wasn’t going to be a good fit? That sounded stressful and a poor experience.
Maybe that’s deluding myself, but it helped to not take the rejections personally.
I think your flaw is the idea of a dream school. There’s so many good schools out there, if you get set on on one when you know the chances this can happen.
Let’s say it was and you were still rejected. Would it make you feel much different? College admissions are unfair, and many qualified applicants are rejected from schools simply because of space. Do you really think that there are only a few thousand students that could do well at Harvard, Stanford, etc? Of course not! There’s probably at least a hundred thousand, and way more than a few of those hundreds will apply!
School rejection doesn’t mean you couldn’t do well at the school. It shouldn’t reflect on you. Find the school that is best for you of your options and go be yourself and enjoy it!
PS: Not all schools will be 60k will they be? Scholarship? Financial Aid? Regardless, if you can easily afford it and value higher education personally then 60k is worth it IMO.
@Dmouth29731 So sorry that you are hurting so much about not getting accepted to your first choice school. You are not alone in your frustration. Believe me when I say, this feeling you have will pass. It is okay to feel sad and tantrum for a while, but you have no choice but to try to find a way to cope, move on, and start to become focused on one of the alternatives that you surely have. Students apply to multiple schools with the hope of securing at least one that they would be at least satisfied to attend. There must be another school on your list that is satisfying.
you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Yours is just another of the dozens of post-Ivy day rants by whites and Asians who decry their dream schools’ “holistic” evaluation criteria and now are stabbing out at diversity admits. Beyond this first layer of pseudo racism, rarely is the ranting directed at other sub-groups: athletes b**, legacies (double or triple admit rate), development admits (very few), or other specialty admits (celebs). And don’t forget those doggone internationals that the school allots 10% of seats of any freshman class.
But despite this supposedly abhorrent system, you pinched your nose and still applied to your “dream” college. Sorry but those admit rates for those sub groups were set aside WAY before you hit “submit” last year. No black kid took your spot. She took the spot of ANOTHER BLACK KID. No Hockey player took your spot. He took the spot of another hockey player who wasn’t as attractive. YOU WERE NEVER IN CONTENTION FOR THAT BLACK KID’S SPOT OR THE HOCKEY PLAYER’S SPOT.
Who took your spot? Another white or Asian kid who frankly, was more desirable to the college than you. Tough to hear for someone who’s likely always been the big fish and top student whenever you entered a room. You get a limited amount of sympathy. But don’t start ranting w/o a larger perspective.
You know who gets screwed the most? The super high achieving international applicant. What’s the avg SAT or ACT of admitted internationals to HYPSM etc? Much higher than the white/asian “general” applicant pool in which you were applying.
How many 35ACT Indian or Chinese or Korean applicants were completely shut out? More than in your applicant pool.
U wanna complain about “merit” ? If you were a viable DMouth applicant, then you’d be accepted in 5 seconds at 95% of colleges in this country. But YOU chose to apply to Dartmouth and its clear admit policies and goals. This is a self inflicted wound.
College isn’t a perfect hollier place. Politic exists. Suck it up.
you may not be so good as you think you are
I don’t know how much accomplished you are but I know many int kids who got rejected from 20+ colleges because of the cap and/or financial status. My friend re-applied this year and still got rejected from 24 colleges. Yikes! Stop complaining and go to somewhere else you are content with.
I didn’t get in Brown University or Colorado College because I wasn’t worth enough to be invested 240k, but I am happy to be in U of Alabama that offered me 100k tuition scholarship.
Roll tide!
I’m a URM and my interviewer literally told me that i “wasn’t exactly Dartmouth’s idea of diversity.” and I did mention legacies in my post as well. So I would reread my post with a better level of comprehension before you act like I’m a racist of my own group. Thanks, have a good day.
Dude- you must understand that Dartmouth isn’t the ONLY school for you out there, perhaps you should have seen your follow up choices and see how they were fitting with you. Don’t compare them to Dartmouth, they aren’t Dartmouth, simply. I wish you nothing but the best as you continue on your journey, I hope you find your place
I don’t know… you were probably not looking for ‘answers’ to your rant but just wanted people listening, agreeing, feeling you and saying it’s okay and everything will be alright you’re a hardworking person etc.
I’m here for that - it is okay if you punched a hole on your room wall or something, you deserved to get into your dream college. why don’t you rant a little more until you feel better! There’s people to listen.
