Dealing with homesickness

I also go to one of those accelerated residential high schools. I'm a junior, too, and the school also makes the elite public list. It's almost cost free at $1,000 a year for everything, including room and board.

At my school there is a student who makes a 5 hour drive every weekend to go home. This is home sickness in the extreme, and really only worsens its effects.

Just keep busy and you won't have time to be home sick. Having several good friends helps also.

I think every student who attends a residential school (the word "boarding" seems so negative for some reason) feels home sickness to some degree. It's part of life. There are ways it can be reduced, but you will still feel home sick at times no matter what. As you get better acquainted with your school, you will experience it less and less.

If you're having real problems with home sickness, talk to your SLA or a counselor. I don't know about your school, but at mine they do a lot to help students with issues like home sickness.
