Dealing with Sleep Deprivation

i go to bed at around midnight, and wake up at 5:30 every weekday morning. friday night, i'm in bed at, like, 10, and sleep right through until 8 or 9 saturday morning.

the worst thing for me after pulling an allnighter is when i hit the "been awake for 24 hours" mark, which for me, is usually around 5:30 in the morning. nothing can keep me awake then - i've drank coffee, done jumping jacks in my room, blared loud music on my ipod, and still kept falling asleep at my desk. i can usually push past it by doing all of the above, but lord, it's painful. if at all possible, i like to take a two hour nap then. it's not much fun waking up from that nap, but it helps me for the rest of the day - it stops me getting that horrible "no, really, just kill me right now if it means i can sleep!" feeling, and keeps me awake during class, too. it's also good, because it means instead of crashing as soon as classes are done, i can force myself to stay awake until my usual bedtime, thus keeping to a (relatively) sane sleep schedule.

so, tips for allnighters: coffee is your new best friend. if you don't like coffee, drink diet coke or something. plus, eat during the night - maybe some chocolate or toast or whatever. as soon as you start to feel like you're gonna fall asleep, get up from your desk and start doing jumping jacks. it'll keep you awake, i promise. don't put the heat on in your room - the warmth always makes me want to sleep. if you're cold, put on a sweater or something.

tips for staying awake during the day: if you're in school and feel yourself drifting off in class, ask for a bathroom pass and go splash yourself in cold water. and run to the bathroom. the adrenaline rush from exercise is oh so very helpful at this point. if you can't get out of class, keep switching positions in your chair every few minutes. and instead of just passively listening to the teacher, make yourself take notes. if it's the most boring class in the history of the world ever, just doodle on a piece of notepaper. the point is to keep yourself doing something to keep yourself awake - even if it's just drawing little hearts on your notebook or whatever. alternate between water and caffeine throughout the day. sip water during class if you're allowed, drink coke/coffee/whatever in the break between classes. also, try to eat something regularly - candy, even though it's unhealthy, or peanut butter or something. whatever you do, don't think about sleeping. that's the hardest thing for me - when i'm so tired, my mind just wanders and i start thinking about my room and my warm and comfy bed and my cosy pajamas and just how nice it would feel to put on my pjs and curl up in bed. and that's when i drift off to sleep in the middle of chem class and my best friend has to kick me very hard in the shins to wake me up before the teacher notices. :) sleep is seductive, oh yes. try very, very, very hard not to think about how much you're going to enjoy getting to sleep - it'll only make you want to sleep even more.

On weekdays - 5 hours
Weekends - 10 hours

I crash on Saturday till like 1pm.
Like Punkrockeeyore, I do ask to go to the toilet in classtime when I can't concentrate at all. I always take the long way to the toilet and back. It's really hard to concentrate when Im super sleepy.. so I usually give up on the latter half of Fridays.

When I know I have to study for a major exam/ completing a paper/ whatever , I take a big big nap straight after school : 3.30pm ~ 7pm. And I do what I need to do from 10.30 ~ 4am.
Yes I know it stuffs my biological clock.
Yes I know it's bad for my health
And yes I don't give a crap.
As long as I do good in the exam, I don't really care about my health. I just make up for it the next day.

Energy drinks and loud music pumps me up at night. (we have sound proof walls). I often sing and write and think and dance at the same time.

That's why sleep is so precious to me. That's why I love my Saturdays. And all my friends know not to ring me on Saturday mornings.

I have Study periods 3 times a week but we are not allowed to sleep!!! like, we get detentions if we are caught not doing work. Sucky sucky.

Caffine's a bad idea actually. I'm someone who can survive weeks on end with 5 hours of sleep a night. When I used to do it with caffine, I was a mess in the morning. Once I stopped drinking though, I feel much more refreshed even after only 5 or less hours of sleep a night. It might keep you up for a short while, but you'll crash afterwards.

If you can do all nighters without caffine, that's the way to go.

Get enough sleep in the first place. If this means cutting back on the studying, so be it. If you have to drop an AP class or two and take the regular class instead, do it. It's just not sustainable, and it's just not worth it.

Are all your teachers just evil? I'm in 5 AP classes, and if I wasn't such a horrible procrastinator, I'd be done all my work by 10. As it is, I usually start my work at 10, so I'm done by midnight (and if it weren't for AIM, I'd be done at 11ish). I'm averaging 6.5 hours of sleep on during the week. Friday and Saturday nights, I get about 10 hours of sleep (sleep at midnight, get up at 10). I don't crash. Usually, I'm starting to feel around 7th/8th period (two easiest classes - Calc AB and Religion)...but then cross country at 3:30 gets me all awake again.

My advice - try and find ways to do your homework at different times. Get to school a bit early and finish off calc problems or something, do some during lunch (for those of you who took a class instead of lunch, you're SOL), do work in other people's classes (like my Studio teacher advocates, as long as it isn't her Art History class)...find some way to break up your homework so you can at least get 6 hours a night.

silentsailor, do you go to HCHS by chance? ;-)

celebrian - you make me so happy, you have no idea.

My trick? Drink loads of caffeine and take a nap after school. Normally all that does is make me have to stay up even later, but I do overall get an extra hour or two of sleep than I would on regular nights. Friday afternoon I normally sleep from 6-10 and then go back to bed at 12-12 on Saturday. It's not healthy, but it works for the most part.
