Ishkaan - What did Tulane say in your letter about how many were awarded this year and how many applied for it?

Fallenchemist-The letter said that over 1000 applied but only 75 applicants were awarded the scholarship.

OK thanks. That’s been the same for at least 4 years in a row now.

How many CCers normally get it and say so? If I don’t have it by tomorrow is it relatively safe to say I wasn’t selected?

Hi My daughter is in Florida and texting me every ten minutes to see if UPS has come yet. Our UPS deliveries always come late, after 6 p.m. so we are not losing hope yet. Just wondering where I can read about winners stats, etc., and I’d like to ask the same question that BungalowDillon asked as well, when it would be safe to assume you weren’t selected.

Oh and we were wondering where the current winners live. I don’t know if that makes a difference because if it is 2nd day air, it is 2nd day air. But we are on Long Island.

Bungalow - In the last 4-5 years, as best I can recall, I would say between 10-15 winners came on here to say so, maybe as many as 20. There seem to be fewer DHS applicants discussing it on here this year than in the past, as jym mentioned. So there will probably be fewer winners and non-recipients posting as well. Who knows why it is lower this year, maybe just an anomaly.

As far as making a conclusion based on not getting a UPS package, the odds are strong that would be correct. There are reports of isolated cases where UPS misdelivered or something else went wrong, but hoping that is the case if you don’t get a package would be grasping at straws. I hope for your sake you get a package, but remember that unlike FedEx, UPS does not deliver on Saturdays.

Comeonups - as far as I know this is the only place where people discuss it. I suppose someone could start a Facebook group, but I don’t usually check there.

A question…what is a Gibson acct? If you are admitted but haven’t yet accepted do you have one?

johnplummer;

I may not word this correctly, but Gibson is Tulanes online access system for a variety of purposes. If you Google “Tulane Gibson” you will get a link to the access page.

My son obtained a user name and password to access Gibson when he first applied, although I don’t recall whether we ever used it to monitor his application progress. I just went in now to see if any DHS info was listed. There was a message indicating he should visit the “admitted students” section (generic message, nothing to do with DHS) and that he should have received a user name and password within two weeks of getting admitted in order to access the admitted students section. I don’t think he ever did, so I don’t know what is in there. The website indicates we should contact our Admissions Counselor to get acess information if we need it, so I would suggest you do this as well.

Son got home and saw the UPS package where we normally stack the day’s mail. I was on the phone so he couldn’t talk to me, but I could see him looking at it curiously as it was thicker and heavier than the typical mailings he has been getting from schools. I finished my call as he started to open it and he commented it was from Tulane. He pulled out the leather binder, looked inside and his eyes got big and he then started reading aloud, very fast, from the beginning so I could hear what he had just read. I could barely understand him as he was very excited. He was particularily pleased that the award letter was not just a form, that it specifically referenced his specific Box project in a couple of descriptive sentences. Nice touch Tulane.

A great way to end the week! Good luck to all those who are waiting.

That’s great! And yes, we were all very pleased at the personal touch when my D won a few years back. So glad for him, he will be floating on a cloud all weekend, telling his friends and waiting for school to start back on Tuesday(?) to tell the school as well.

Its so exciting!! I love reliving it all with you. I confess, I still have the UPS envelope from 2008 :)

Ther was a facebook page started when my ds applied and there was a discussion of the DHS applicants and winners then. Those of you interested should check there. I would bevery surprised if there wasn’t a fb page for the class of 2016.

Anyone from New York heard back yet? either a yes or no, i’m getting tired of waiting :(

So disappointed for my younger daughter. She’s visiting her sister at Tulane this weekend. I didn’t have the heart to tell her before she left that the packets went out on Wednesday and that she hasn’t received one.

I got my UPS mail package yesterday! I wonder if any other Oklahomans got the scholarship!

We haven’t gotten anything in NY yet either. My daughter’s stats were pretty high so I really thought she had a shot. Wondering how I can find out what stats were of winners? I tried to search asloves threads but didn’t have any success.

I felt the same way. You can look up their stats by clicking their names and viewing their past posts. (Usually in Decision threads or Chance me threads) I sort of regret downplaying my EC’s in the application. I thought it would make it more personal or something, but these guys all had great EC’s, as well as grades and test scores.

The competition and requirements for getting a DHS are very much like getting into Harvard. One needs great stats (usually meaning 2250+ SAT or 34+ ACT and top 5% of class with a fair number of AP’s), great recs, great EC’s, a great project and whatever intangibles go into it. And with all that, there are those that don’t get it who have the credentials, but with a less than 7% acceptance rate (just like Harvard admissions) simply didn’t get the offer.

I wonder if they will do a secondary award again this year. Last year for the first time they did $28,000 awards (the Presidential was $25,000 then), so I would think if they are doing that again it would be $30,000 this year.

Secondary awards? That sounds encouraging. Just to clarify, it’s like a “commended” for DHS applicants only?

I most likely didn’t get the DHS, although I won’t totally give up hope until I get the “sorry” letter, so here are my stats for the benifit of the future. Hopefully I can pull in one of these secondary awards.

35 ACT
SAT II’s: 790, 790, 760
UW 3.76 W: 4.2something
AP: 6 5’s, 2 4’s,
Senior Course-load: WG Latin 4, AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Psych, AP Music Theory, AP Lit
Summer Classes at Community College
National Merit Commended, National AP Scholar

Cross-county, Track, Blackbelt Tae-Kwon-Do, Job, Quizbowl, Piano and Guitar, NHS

Missouri: Half White, Half Indian
Essay: Common App essay
Why Tulane: Heart-felt and informed.
Rec: Never saw
Project: Decently creative, pretty personal, no mention of Tulane- but incorporation of the box so it was clear I didn’t just reuse an essay.

oh, BungalowDylan ( I can’t remember how you spelled your name) your stats are outstanding. You should have gotten it!!! My daughter had a 2230, top 4%, 7 AP’s and tons of EC’s, etc. But it is what it is. I’m sure there were a ton of qualified applicants and they had to make some very tough decisions.

I wouldn’t lose hope yet, though, Bungalow!!!

Congrats to everyone who did get it.
