how do they send the dean's scholarship out? i got a letter yesterday and i'm worried that i'll only get a dean's (i need at least a presidential to go).

In general, Deans is given to presidential scholar candidates who don't do well in the interview. However, it is possible in the interviews to go both up or down.

No pressure, bluebeard. :)

thanks guys. my parents are really mad at me because they don't believe that me getting a letter yesterday meant that i got a scholarship.

^ lol That's what my parents said last year... something about counting my chickens before they hatched. Best thing is, they were the ones who were yelling loudest when I got my trustee letter ;)

ok my friend's mail just came and she didn't receive a letter about scholarships. isn't the scholarship letter supposed to come the day after the acceptance?

ok so three of us have gotten the mail but there wasn't a scholarship letter in it. how long does it usually take for the scholarship letter to come? we're all doubting our scholarship status.

Wait a week and if you haven't gotten it by then then you'll have a reason to be worried.

Two or three days is no big deal.

Nikara, misoobishi, or anyone who's been through the process: Do you have to have special qualifications to get the trustee vs. the presidential scholarship, or is it just the interview?

Two or three days...! I'm gonna be waiting for the mail truck every single day.

Several answers here: First of all, I actually received my letter the same day I got my acceptance. Some people I knew that year got it a few days later. I think last year the separation between acceptance and scholarship letter was larger- ask one of those ppl. Secondly, I have no idea what the difference is for who gets considered for which scholarship. To me, it seemed like luck. I'm not really sure. However, based on what they say you are being considered for, your final decision is based about halfway on the interview, and halfway by looking at the application. Remeber, each school has a certain number of scholarships it can give out. You are being compared to the other people who applied for the same school, which is why some say that it is easier to get a scholarship in LAS, as there are more students, so the high grades go down. I have no idea if that is true. I don't think I even explained it the right way. Oh well. The main point is that after you are officially being considered for the scholarship, the only factor that you can affect is the interview. I don't think I even sent in mid-year grades.

Yeah, I had to wait a week or so to get my scholarship letter... the wait was excruciating :) The difference between presidential vs trustee... well, there might be the "numbers" difference. They said last year that the average SAT score for presidential people was around 2100 and the average score for trustee people was 2200. I imagine that the interview is the deciding factor. Also, Nikara is right, each school is different, so CLAS has different standards than Viterbi or Annenberg etc.

i was told by usc that viterbi gives out the most scholarships

bluebeard, where'd you hear that from usc? in my case that's good news if that's true!

the assistant dean of viterbi. which major are you going into? i'm a mechanical engineer. maybe we'll be in some classes together next year.

ah that's cool...I'm doing bioengineering

well maybe i'll see you around next year.

Mechanical engineering? My dad used to be a professor of mechanical engineering at USC! He said he really liked the department, so if you decide to go, I'm sure you'll have a blast.
