Death of custodial parent and impact on EFC

I'm a sophomore at a private university that meets need without loans. It requires the CSS Profile (and FAFSA ofc). My parents are divorced and I have been living with my mother. For the past two years, the FA office has waived the submission of the non-custodial parent's info (my father's).

My mother recently passed away and left her assets to me under a trust managed by my uncles. I don't know how this will impact FA -- am I now an independent? Do the assets in trust count as student's assets?

I’m very sorry for your loss.

I think that this is a question that is best answered by the financial aid department of your school. It may depend on the particular circumstances that lead to waiver of the NCP information.
