Has any one been to the Policy debate camp run by UT Austin in the summer? This is for a rising sophomore. Any reviews or advice as soon as possible would be a big help.
Debate camps can be very useful. When my son was in high school he attended one at the University of Michigan. He became a state champion policy debater. For two summers after he graduated from high school he coached at the Spartan Debate Institute at Michigan State University (http://debate.msu.edu/debate/sdi).
I can’t help you regarding the UT summer camp, but I know the MSU one is superb (I know the director), and I encourage your son to participate in debate camp in one location or another.
It depends on what skills you’re trying to develop? Tricks? K’s? DA’s? UTNIF and U Mich (MNDI) are probably the best… one of my friends from the circuit went to Stanford (SNFI) and really liked it.
KU also has a debate camp - https://debate.ku.edu/camp-2015 ( it says 2015 but takes you to the current camp) Some kids from my son’s debate team have attended and they went to nationals their Jr & Sr year.
FYI about the Kansas Debate Team:
The NDT is the longest running national debate championship tournament that began at West Point in 1947. It is an annual championship tournament that individual teams must qualify to attend. KU is in the top 5 in the country in number of teams advancing to elimination rounds at the NDT.
KU has qualified teams to the NDT for 49 consecutive years, every year since 1968
KU has won the NDT 5 times (2009, 1983, 1976, 1970, 1954)
KU was the national runner up at the NDT in 2016
KU has reached the final four at the NDT 15 times (2016, 2009, 1999, 1994, 1983, 1979, 1977, 1976, 1973, 1971, 1970, 1960, 1954, 1948)
Thank you all for taking the time to reply.
