Debate Team

i'm a homeschooler and i'm starting a debate team. how should i introduce our team to the local regular school league/national leagues?

League? My school doesn't actually debate in debate team...Debate team includes such activities as mock trial (the only free one), Harvard Model Congress, Seton Hall Model U.N., and some other things...

I'm not totally sure about it, but my school's debate team goes to different high schools each week for debate tournament. Perhaps you could contact the head of the league, or maybe talk to a judge and see what he or she says.

What type of debate do you plan on doing? Assuming you mean debate like policy, LD, or congress (National Forensics League affiliated), and not model UN or mock trial or something, my suggestion (after my 4 years of policy debate) is to contact a coach of a team at a nearby school. They will be able to explain everything as well as give you some info on various tournaments that you might be able to attend, and perhaps help you out with starting this stuff as it can be difficult to start a team. If you go to the website below, it lists emails for the district chairs - if you figure out what district you are in, you can just email the coach.

Have you considered trying to join a team at a nearby school? They have the advantages of coaches devoted to debate as well as other resources (tubs full of evidence, for example). Also, keep in mind that most tournaments have ended for the year, so you will have to wait for next year to actually compete. There are plenty of camps over the summer if you're interested - they're really useful for learning/practicing debate.

Just have fun - go to tournaments and enjoy yourself.

you may not necessarily need to join a league. There are usually many college tournaments you can go to, but they may get pricey... Way more expensive than regular debate league admissions.. This is for National Forensics League types (Public Forum, Lincoln DOuglas, Policy, as well as Parliamentary)...
