December 2010 ACT English Discussion

Oh, darn. I thought it was “elses” for some odd reason. It was one of the ones that I skipped and then came back to, but as crunched for time, so I just picked anything that looked appeasing. Turns out I was wrong. ■■■.

But, all in all, I didn’t feel so confident about English as everyone else apparently did. Boo. :(

what did you guys get for the one about the city planners? Who or Whom?

who…

Do you guys remember this one question from the garbage one? The one that said “which of the following is least acceptable?” Choices were: aroma, smell, odor, whiff. What did you guys put ?

^^^Pretty sure I put “who,” only because I thought it sounded more “right” xP

^I put whiff, because it sounds like a verb

After that question, there was one other one I was unsure about.

QUESTION: “Pei…,while”

,while was the correct choice and not the ‘:’, correct?

And that’s pretty much about it…the rest I felt confident about, so anyone else have any more questions to post?

I put who. But I’m not sure about that one. I agree with Chopper – it sounded more “right” than the others. Aha!

whiff

10char

Who was a “no change”, right?

Are you sure? I put the latter because weren’t there a list of things he built or somehting like that?

It was definitely whiff: it sounded off in context. And I also got two whos. Also, what did you guys put for the one where the why “farm” was necessary in the sentence where the artist moved to South (or North) Carolina. I had originally put that it described the “precise place” or something but changed my the answer to the other one.

^I did what you did. I put that it was redundant. But i think it was the one that said “precise place”

Really? I said it linked to the next paragraph because that sentence talked about having children, and the next paragraph talked about the importance/effect of parenthood or something like that

No, I don’t think it was the one that said “precise place” because it didn’t precisely describe where the farm was in the state. I’m pretty sure it was the other answer that said the phrase was necessary.

ACTTester + others: Although I did put whiff, apparently aroma has a pleasurable connotation which did not make any sense in context. Also, whiff can be used as a noun. So I think aroma was the correct answer.

For the farm one, I said it should be removed because it did not have anything to do with art.

The rest of the essay never brought up the farm again, and even if you thought that fruits and vegetables would be grown in the farm, other objects were also emphasized, and gardens are different from farms.

I think I put the answer choice talking bout how it connected her to her past and her art, cause the following sentence has words such a “back to basic” life and I just thought that it mattered and connected to her painting

Butt u guys r prolly right, so -1 so far

I put “precise place,” but wasn’t entirely sure about it. >_<

^But it was MORE PRECISE.

aNd you mean unnecessary?

Yale: No. there wasn’t

But there was a colon one where there was a list. There was 2 of these questions, I think you are talking about the other one (where the correct answer was the colon).

I’m talking about a different one.

Wait, I said necessary because it didn’t just talk about her moving. It also talked about her having kids as the reason of her moving… which links to the next topic sentence of how parenthood shaped her painting
