December 2014 ACT Discussion Thread

@CrypticDestiny29‌ alright. for english, note your rhetorical sub score and your mechanical skills sub score. Mechanical skills (or something synonymous with that, i don’t know if i remember the name) are mostly things like comma rules(its in the princeton review book), punctuation(the : and ; are never used in the same question), modifiers (learn the rule of proximity and what a dangling/hanging modifier is), subject-verb agreement, and idioms (lie, lay, effect, affect, etc.). Those help with mechanical skills. Rhetorical skills are more like which sentence fits better here or what is the purpose of the passage. for those, make sure you read before and after it and try all options given and look for any problem you come across for each answer. i went from a 27 to a 34 mostly by learning comma rules and punctuation.

How is everyone else studying?

@gminor Thanks! I will learn these tonight. Do you have any tips for science and reading section? I am running out of time in science section. Although I somehow manage my time in Reading section, but I still make many mistakes.

I find that using a stopwatch and pacing yourself gradually like slowing down or speeding up gradually in a section helps more than doing 3 of the passgaes and finding u have very little time left on the last 1.

Oh okay, Thanks!

I’m really hoping for at least a 32

Good luck everybody! :slight_smile:

Thanks. We’ll need it

Good luck to all ACT test takers.

Bring a snack and an energy drink to have at the break to keep you going for the second half.

I have a question. Is this the right sentence construction: the higher he jumps, the better he plays. Do i need that comma and is this even a valid sentence?

Wishing you guys all good luck and praying for a 30+.

@cooldude1098 I believe that is a contrasting comma, so yes and yes.

@others
What is the best snack for the break?

@gminor‌

Im probably gona take a banana or something like that.

Last time for me to take the ACT, just found out the uni I’m heading for won’t accept December scores so that’s a bit depressing. Still though, hoping for 32-33, got a 31 last time. I might be able to pull off a 34 if I could get my math up (weakest score, 28 last time when the rest were like 34-32-32).

i hope my scores are better on the real deal than on my practice tests… i’ve taken 4 practice tests ranging from 30 to 32 composite. i just plan on bringing a granola bar to eat during the break

First time taking ACT tomorrow and I’ve come down with a nasty cold. Is it okay to keep tissues on desk or in hand during test? During AP testing this year I also had a bad cold and my proctor wouldn’t let me have tissues out because she thought I was cheating with them or something.
