What school in California has a decent Bio program? Thanks

UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD

Private CA schools with strong bio programs (in no particular order, and with varying degrees of selectivity): Stanford, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Pepperdine, University of San Diego, Occidental, University of the Pacific, University of Redlands.

Flopsy's already mentioned three UC's, but I'd add UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara to her UC list as well, although UC Irvine isn't shabby either.

And, some of the Cal State schools also have decent bio programs, check out in particular: San Diego State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Humboldt State, Cal Poly Pomona.

UC Davis has an incredible bio. program- perhaps the best in California?

Best veterinary school in the country, best agricultural school in the country- all of this is biology. If you're looking into a specific field of biology, then maybe there are better options- I know UCSD excels in certain areas of biology. In general, UC Davis has a great overall biology program. Remember, it was created as Berkeley's farm school. This is Davis' specialty.

Even UCR can cover your bases in bio. Has no one heard of the Biomed program? It's incredibly difficult and competitive, and is quite strong as well. As so many people at UCs are interested in majoring in biology, you won't have trouble finding it.

If you are a female then I would recommend Mills College...it's biology program is great however it is a single sex school.

USC, UCD

Other schools mentioned

I don't know much about LAC, but I believe they can't be much better than top research universities. Oh, Caltech is supposed to be good at everything they do.

The Claremonts and Occidental are probably the best LACs, but others range from good to okay.

I'm surprised that a certain school in Pasadena has only been mentioned once. I would argue that that school's bio program is pretty decent.

Sakky, you must be talking about Occidental!

Caltech is alright . . .

I am trying to figure out if ppl are listing good bio programs or 'decent' bio programs...or do the standards just mush together n e ways?

They are listing great to outstanding bio programs. There are a lot more schools in California whose bio programs wouldn't even rate as "good."

caltech is not so bad...

Their bio program is not as good as the one at UCSD [bioengineering] or Stanford. Berkeley is probably better than Davis as well. Pomona > Davis in bio as well, I believe.

I laughed when I saw this thread. California has so many good schools it's not even fair to the rest of us.

If occidental only moved a few miles over, then they would be in pasadena

Pomona is great for bio

Somebody told me that Stanford was a decent school.

I've heard that too, that they have people there who are like....smart and stuff

You have got to be kidding me? UC Davis is very solid but to rank it as the best among a group that includes Stanford, UCLA, UCSD, Berkeley, and Caltech is a joke.
