Who's a committed Tulane Honors student? woohoo!!

Also, discussion about Butler vs a general freshman dorm. Is it much quieter? Is there still partying?

I just put in my housing and enrollment deposit today :D

Also, discussion about Butler vs a general freshman dorm. Is it much quieter? Is there still partying?

I went to visit a week ago and the rooms in Butler seem kind of small. And I thought that the exterior of the building was a bit unattractive. But it seemed relatively quite and neat and had very nice brick walls on the inside of the dorm rooms. Wall on the other hand seemed nice on the outside but I didn’t see the inside, though I have heard it is the nicer dormroom with facualty living inside…

I’m not really sure if I really want to stay in Butler, though being around people with similar classes seems tempting.

Speegzie - Yes, Butler is much quieter than the other dorms. I have never hung out there so I can’t help you with regard to the amount of partying that goes on. Tulane14, who lives there, can probably help you out there.

iridescentidyll - Wall, in my opinion, is the nicest freshman dorm. Living in Butler has no correlation to the classes you take, just that you’re all in the honor’s program. Although many honors students choose Butler, you will find many others in the other dorms as well. The same reasons why students pick Butler, are the same reasons people pick not to be in Butler. It’s all about what kind of experience you’re looking for.

I was admitted honors and I’m nearly committed. I visited for Destination Tulane last Friday, and my impressions were that Butler is really, really quiet, as opposed to Monroe/Sharpe, which are only somewhat loud and crazy on the weekends.

I want the quintessential freshman experience, so Monroe is the most logical choice personally. And I was assured (by my admissions counselor) that mandatory quiet hours are enforced in Monroe, even on weekends.

OK, I will let gabby say if the quiet hours are really enforced, lol. My suspicion is the enforcement level increases at mid-terms and finals, but hey. Maybe they do enforce it regularly.

My D was in Butler freshman year. It is quieter for sure (shermani got it right with the “compared to”), but not “quiet” as in non-social. At least on her floor there was regular “open door” socializing and a lot of “want to head to X?” kind of stuff. Pretty normal dorm stuff, not a lot of people that got blitzed but certainly people that liked to go to parties as much as anyone.

As gabby says, it depends on what you are looking for, especially freshman year. Like her, jym’s son was honors but picked Monroe for exactly the reason shermani is. My D wanted the quieter atmosphere. It is nice to have the choice.

Is it difficult to get into Wall for freshman housing? What would be the main differences between Wall and Butler?

Completely different, actually. Wall is by application, it is currently Tulane’s only Residential College style dorm. That means a professor and his family actually live in the dorm and work with the students in a kind of self-governing system. The new dorm for sophomores that opens this fall will also be Residential College format, and the hope is that in 10-15 years they all will be. Wall is also suite style, with 4 rooms around a central bath. It is selective to get into in the sense it requires the application I mentioned, which includes an essay. I don’t know how “hard” it is though, i.e. I don’t know how many apply for the number of slots available.

Butler is the honors dorm, although honors students do choose to live elsewhere, as you can see from the previous posts, and some non-honors students do live in Butler. Butler is the hall-style bath. It is coed by floor, while I believe Wall is coed by alternating suite. Butler is probably a little quieter than Wall, although it hard to compare because they are physically set up so differently.

My freshman d lives in Monroe and I have never even heard the concept of enforced quiet hours. Not saying it doesn’t exist, I just never heard of it! Since her floor happens to be all female it isn’t particularly crazy/noisy. As for Wall, I stayed there for Destination Tulane and it was very nice. My room and another room shared one bathroom (it wasn’t 4 rooms sharing). I don’t know if they are all alike.

I think you are right, Vitrac. I think it is 2 rooms sharing, not 4. As was famously said once, I “misremembered”.

Are the applications for Wall available on the website? Is there a specific deadline for it or is it filled as the applications come in?

My host lived in Butler, and she said she absolutely loved it. I met her group of friends, and they all lived in Butler as well, and they did not seem like quiet nerdy kids, they seemed like normal college kids, so I wouldn’t let that hold you back from living in Butler. I’m heard Monroe and Sharp are pretty gross, and insane stories about not being able to sleep any day of the week because of serial partiers. It’s not like that in Butler, I think it gets rowdy on the weekends, but during the week kids there study and buckle down.

Quick, FC, call my kids! I was right about something!!!

Avenlea - I must disagree with what you’ve heard about the inability to sleep in Monroe. I have never had a problem sleeping. Many people I know in both Monroe and Sharp are serious students and certainly wouldn’t be able to keep their high GPA without sleep…

Also, I have received ONE email about quiet hours being enforced and that was before mid-terms. So, I would have to say that they are not really enforced.

Okay so I don’t know if any of you know this, but do monroe and sharp fill up? I’m visiting for the april honors weekend, and I am like 99% sure that I want to go to Tulane but want to check out the campus first. Monroe and Sharp are my two first choices (meaning i don’t know the difference between the two aside from that they’re different buildings, so if someone can clarify for me, that would be great!), but I don’t want them to fill up in the next two weeks.

Has that been a problem in the past? I know at CU Boulder (my other possibility) you have to register for housing as soon as you find out, even if its just a maybe, because it fills up so quickly. Is tulane like this?

Thanks!

Oh, please Vitrac. You were right about something else. Once. Weren’t you?? Maybe I am misremembering that too. Hmmmm.

LOL, you have been a super help to many on here. Your D is so active, and the things you can relate to others based on her experiences in and outside of the classroom are invaluable.

I love the mix on here of students, recent grads (not so many but definitely some), prospective Tulane parents, current Tulane parents, recent Tulane parents, and the occasional “others” that have such great info and experiences. It is gratifying to hear from the “prospies” that we are one of the nicest and most helpful groups on CC. I truly believe that is how Tulane is as well.

gabby - you and avenlea are probably both right. I bet the boys sections are both grosser and louder. That is also true at (Insert name of any university here).

Sharkie - no, Tulane doesn’t do it that way. For freshman housing no one registers until after everyone has committed, and there is time for you to do a roommate search and all that stuff. So no worries. Besides, if you are a guy (and I think I remember that you are) if you want Monroe or Sharp you will have no trouble getting them. They are the largest dorms that house men. There is very little difference in their character or layout.

OK, you are not a guy! LOL, sorry. You still have a pretty good shot at Sharp or Monroe if you find a roommate that also puts those down as choices #1 and 2. That’s your best bet. But there is a chance you will get JL. Just the way it is. So if you are that set on Sharp or Monroe, find a roommate as quickly as possible, and both of you get your applications in as soon as housing lets you. They will send you all the material and deadlines. You definitely have not missed anything, nor or you in danger of missing anything.

Very true, very true…:)

Ok so also then question… If I don’t find a roommate and just want it to be random, if I send in my housing app RIGHT away, will that increase my chances? Also, I love the big windows in all of monroe, do you know if both sides of the building have those? anddd then for the floor layout is it all girls on one floor and all boys on another or does it go every-other within the floor? like girl room boy room girl room etc? Sorry I have so many questions!

The floors are divided in half with the elevator in the middle. Boys in one half, girls in the other half. I believe both sides of Monroe have the big windows.
