Decision: Notre Dame vs Case Western Reserve vs Illinois Wesleyan

I am looking to major in either Biomedical Engineering (or Biomechanical Engineering with a minor/concentration in Bioengineering in the case of ND since they don't have BME), Biology, or something of the sort, and I may want to be Pre-Med but I'm not sure yet. I am a cross-country and track runner, and I know I'll be able to run at both Case and IL Wesleyan. The ND coach said I'll definitely get a chance to try out for the team if I go there, but it isn't necessarily certain that I'll be able to (so I would be walking on, not a scholarship athlete). However, my coach who ran D1 when she was in college thinks I will be able to make the team, but I know D1 is a much larger commitment than D3, but I loooove running and competing so I think it might be worth it. I really want to be able to do research and study abroad, even if its over the summer. I got a 36 on the ACT, have a 4.5 GPA on a 4.0 weighted scale, and have taken plenty of weighted/AP classes. Please please please help me decide; most of my friends have already committed somewhere. Also, feel free to ask me any more questions that might help me make a decision. Thanks!!!

At Notre Dame, it’s really easy to get into research, and a lot of the students study abroad junior year. It also has a really unique community and service-devoted atmosphere. When I visited ND, another thing I noticed was that they really seem to care for their students. I can’t speak for the other colleges, but there’s a bit on ND; hope it helps!

Thanks! Any other opinions? I think I’m mostly deciding between ND and Case, and I’ve been told that ND has a better atmosphere but Case has more rigorous academics. Is this true?

I don’t know much about Case honestly but I know tons of kids that go to Notre Dame and they love it. And halmecollege is right about the research opportunities.

Are costs similar? Is that an issue at all? If you have aspirations for med school you should consider overall costs. It seems to me that you are leaning towards Case. You can definitely run at Case and Case had the Biomedical engineering program you want.

Yea, I got more scholarship money from Case so it is less expensive. It’s just that a lot of my friends and family are pushing for ND since it is so well known and such

Turn off the prestige hounds. You are the one who has to carry the debt from med school if you go that route. Unless they plan to pay the bill, ignore them. Case is a fine school for what you want to do, and if you are happy with it, choose what is best for you.

Thanks the help; I’ve got some thinking to do

Curious…what dud you decide?
