Decision reply date May1

I applied for fall 2011 transfer. Not early decision.
So I have applied to five universities; so far, only university of rochester has replied me(today). They offer me $5000 per year.

However, it is my 4th choice and they required me to reply by May1?!!!
The deadline of the transfer student application is actually June1, do you think they mess my application with regular students? I want to wait for another universities' reply, what should I do? Is it possible to put the deposit later than May1 :/ it is way too early....

I am really nervous now... I don't know if I will get into my top3 choice.

1) I don't want to miss the chance of going to my top3 choice
however
2) I don't want to end up having no school to attend in fall2011, not even my 4th choice which is good -> U of R

Thanks in advance for your reply and help.

Contact the admissions office on Monday; they are very helpful. They will be able to give you all your options.

thank you for your response, Chedva.
I will email the admission office, but I expect the reply will be:you have to make a deposit before may1 or else you will not be considered as an applicant for fall 2011 ):

I don’t know. UR doesn’t seem that harsh. Although I’m having the exactly opposite problem. Rochester is the only school I haven’t heard back from yet. They won’t budge and basically told me I had to fix it with the other schools whose deadlines are coming up.

I would call UR and I would call the other schools and see if there’s anything that can be done on either side.

When did you finish your application? Did you go on their website for the applications status? Is the second committee reviewing your application yet? It took the second one about 2 weeks and the last one about 3 weeks to review until the decision comes out(number5). It took only a week for the first one though. hmmm is UR your very top choice? if not, you shouldn’t wait till other opportunities fade away.
I am hesitating because U of R is my 4th choice  and when I haven’t gotten any letters from any of the universities yet, I feel like I might miss the chance of going to my dream schools.

hmmm… ofcourse U of R is a very good school too. But I am from Iowa, and I would for sure want to wait for Chicago’s reply first  I don’t want to miss any chances, not even U of R.

after reading this post, I actually raise U of R to be my third choice.

I think Cornell focuses too much on academic… In Cornell, I will not be as happy as in Rochester.

My application was finished in the middle of Feb. I have checked the application status everyday since around Christmas. I have contacted them every so often and that is the only time my status changes. They are always very cryptic. Last week I contacted them to ask what the hold up was and they basically said they would give me my decision when they give me my decision and I should ask the other schools to extend their deadlines. But then added I could call on Tuesday and he might be able to give me more information about my decision. Within an hour my status was moved up to Step 4, the committee.

The only thing I can think is that they plan to mail it on Tuesday. He wouldn’t be able to tell me my decision on the phone so the whole thing is a bit weird IMO.

UR is one of 2 top choices. UR had been, by far, my top choice but I started to feel as though I was treated somewhat carelessly as a transfer applicant. If UR doesn’t value me as an applicant, are they going to value me as a student?

They started reviewing my application before I handed in my high school transcript(I guess it isn’t really required because I am going to finish my second year of college in May).
But then I was all nervous that they never updated my transcript, I emailed twice to the first reader(they provided his info on there), but he never replied. So I contacted the admission office instead, they are usually pretty good responder, take about 1-2days.

I think you will get your letter very soon since you are on step 4 already! As I said, I was on step 4 for about 3 weeks, maybe a bit less than that. I applied for NYU as well, I sent them my High school transcript twice by mail, once by email(scan) and once by fax. However, they never updated my status and so my application is still incomplete at this point. I put a lot of effort in every applications that I handed in and now, I received one acceptance letter and there is still 2 universities with incomplete application even though I tried to contact them but all they say is: It takes 3-4 weeks for us to update your status; and the deadline is way past a month! So I totally understand your situation.

can i ask what your another top choice is?

The whole online status thing doesn’t seem to work very well at many schools. UR had my hs transcript and it just said something like, “unknown high school transcript” then all of a sudden it changed to “Mountain Lake High School” or something like that. I definitely didn’t go to Mountain Lake High School. I called and asked and they said they had the right transcript but it still said it on the status site until about a week ago. Now there is no check mark there at all. They also never updated my Rec’s and I had to call to make sure they got them. They did, they just never updated the status about it and still haven’t.

I’ve been accepted everywhere I applied except UR where I haven’t gotten the decision. My other choice is Lehigh. I like them both because they are small, kind of niche schools. By coincidence, according to one ranking I saw, they are tied for 28th. What I liked about Rochester was that it seemed to be pretty grounded. Lehigh has the reputation of being a party school and kind of conservative. On the other hand, Rochester seems more down to earth, open and accepting.

Different departments; one has nothing to do with the other. Remember, right now the Admissions Office is the most important office at UR. Once you’re on campus, unless you volunteer or get a job in the office, you’ll never set foot there again!

I think so too. But Admission office always gives the very first impression to the applicants, both accepted and denied. My impression on U of R has changed so many times in just one day, from the Dean’s letter to scholarship letter, from scholarship letter to reply slip and from reply slip to the post that a representative wrote : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-rochester/1119919-some-notes-our-decisions.html

NotaClue: At least they said they received your high school transcript, lol. My experience with NYU has been so bad :frowning: I will consider for a while even if I got a letter from them! I have never heard of Lehigh, I guess it is because I am a foreigner who has been living in Iowa for 3 years. :stuck_out_tongue: I hope you will receive your letter soon and make your decision. I still feel like university of rochester is a better choice, a school which is notorious for being a partying school doesn’t sound too good to me

@chedva that’s what I keep telling myself. I really love everything about Rochester except what I’ve personally experienced in admissions. I must note that mconklin seems great, it’s just the vibe I’ve gotten from other admissions people.

Kameow, NYU is a strange place in terms of admissions but if you can afford to go there it seems like a great experience

Lehigh is in pennsylvania. It has a great reputation for my major: engineering. It has many good qualities aside from the partying rep.

Where do you live, actually?
I live in Iowa and am applying for schools in iowa, illinois and ny. lol. (just because I am alone in the U.S, I don’t need to worry about moving my whole family around for me; and I want the best school for myself.)

NYU actually has a very similar tuition with University of Rochester(about$40000). NYC will be fun but ofcourse higher living expense over there. In contrast, UR’s campus is better for sure since NYU doesn’t even have a campus. But, the reason I opened this post wasn’t for NYU anyways  I want to at least wait for University of Chicago’s response, it is my first choice and my dream school.

I don’t know anything about pennsylvania but I am not interested in living there :stuck_out_tongue: relax! I handed in my common app at the end of feb; and all my materials in late March. You will receive your letter very soon (:

Ah, I am at the mercy of Financial Aid. I have heard that NYU has horrible FA that’s why I see it as more expensive. For people not so dependent on FA it is more comparable to UR I suppose.

I lived in Chicago all my life until a couple years ago when I moved to Florida. U of Chicago is a great school. I’m sure we will be happy where ever we end up.

I really do hope U of Rochester works out. I really do love the school and campus. I think it would be a great experience. It’s just this feeling that transfers are not valued by admissions really bothers me. I want to go to a school where I am welcomed and wanted.

I had a few issues with my transfer application, although very little of it was UR’s fault and almost all of it was my prior college being very lax about sending out transcripts  I can safely say that I have felt incredibly welcomed and wanted at U of R; I felt like they genuinely appreciated me at my interview, I loved the admissions packet I got, I was thrilled by the orientation and the reception I’ve gotten from teachers and peers. I would definitely suggest calling admissions and trying to make sure your stuff is in order, because I know they’re really busy with the incoming freshman and stuff may have just gotten misfiled. I really hope it works out for you, I love it here.

thank you for all the replies!
I have the updated news, they pushed my reply date to the end of May
I am really excited about that because I like how flexible and considerate the admission counselors are.

NotaClue: Unfortunately, I am an international transfer student so I basically am not able to apply for FA. NYU is 38xxx& UR is 41xxx without FA, so pretty similar. And yes, I have heard about NYU is notorious for their FA package  so sad. It is such a famous school but they don’t seem to care about students in need. Have you heard anything from them yet?

writercat: I didn’t go to any interviews but so far, I have had incredible experience with U of R. I am happy for you, and very surprised that the orientation was amazing; I am hoping an amazing one since the orien. I attended in college was super boring. hmm I do think they handle things pretty well and considerate for students.

Just a word about NYU’s or any other school’s reputation about aid or grades or whatever: don’t believe it. They give out aid, but people tend to complain more about not getting it because the school is a top choice, it’s big and lots of people must be disappointed by any decision. NYU in particular is very popular because NYC has relatively few universities - dramatically fewer when you think of the size of the city, let alone the metro area. Remember, however, aid for transfers is often less at any school.

Same issue with grades at schools - not UR - where people talk about “deflation”; it is almost never true. For example, I know of more than one school where they made an effort to slow the rate of average grade inflation and that has become “grade deflation” in the high school mind. You can point this out and note that other schools have similar averages but it come back and back like the undead in a zombie movie.

make sense. it is kinda weird that the reputation of nyu on financial aid package is especially bad though. Popular and low acceptance rate like chicago sounds like they have a pretty good financial aid package; i wonder if it is related to the student population. well personally,I don’t know anything about financial aid because I am not qualified for that.
