Decisions are up!

I don't mean to give you a hard time but .... it is very frustrating

" I was never planning to attend Smith since it's so far away, and Massachusetts weather is so different from Southern California weather."

My daughter was waitlisted.Smith was her first choice...

Maybe if less people who never planned to attend didn't apply.( I sure your not the only one ...) There wouldn't be a wait-list in the first place.

Lisa

Lisa, to be fair, Smith figures into its calculations that roughly half of those offered won't accept.

Lisa & Mr. B., if your daughters are seriously interested in Smith, I strongly would urge her to write a letter, saying that Smith is #1 choice. It worked out well for a friend of my D's and she's very happy that she stuck with the process. She'd already sent in a deposit to another school when she got off the waitlist.

Nearly a third of the waitlist students were ultimately accepted last year.

I realize schools accept about twice as many students as they need. But if they had less students to pick from it would increase the odds of getting in.

Still why apply if you "never" plan to attend even if accepted? That is my question.

The letter we received : states 0 students were accepted from the wait list last year. So I don't know where you are getting your information?

In my opinion it is rather unethical tell one school you will attend and then at the last minute change your mind. Now maybe all the schools with wait lists have no problem with this .... they can get someone to fill the spot ... Some schools do not have wait list though and could be left lacking...

Yah, it is a little hard to hear students who dont even want to go getting into smith when i got waitlisted and i would definitely go if i got in.

BTW, my letter did not say anything about how many they accepted last year, they just said 'a small number" ..unless im not reading it all

To all those waitlisted...

yeah its tough hearing that people who got in dont even want to go. But look at the bright side of things...if they don't enroll than theyre freeing up another spot for you :)

Just my 2 cents...

OK I know thats small comfort and that being waitlisted sucks. :(

It is tough to be wait listed.

We received a letter and a sheet, Frequently Asked Questions about the Wait List at Smith College.

I'll quote from it:

"#5 How many students are usually admitted from the Wait List?

It depends on the year. Sometimes, we cannot admit any students. Other years, we may admit fewer than ten or as many as 70 students. Last year, we were not able to make any offers from the wait list."

A belated CONGRATULATIONS !! to all of you accepted. For those who were waitlisted, rumor around Smith is that they will be going to the waitlist more this year than ever, so don't give up hope.
Smith may still be reeling from the huge 08 class and therefore have been more conservative in the number of young ladies they offered admission.
If Smith is still your first choice....let them know.
My continuing Good Luck wished to all of you.

Lisa, it's possible the data is two years old...it's from PR's THE BEST 357...32 percent taken from a list of 133. I also would not be surprised if they were being more conservative this year, admitting fewer but then using more of a waitlist. Hmmm. The president did say that last year's class was the biggest ever...that would make sense if more students matriculated than they expected.

I applied transfer... I got a phone call today... I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED!!!! I'm so psyched. I'm not sure if I'll be going or now-- as a transfer, I won't have all of my decisions until early JUNE-- but there's a pretty big chance I'll go to Smith. I'm awfully excited to be accepted.

This year, Smith had the highest number of applications ever (at abut 3600 applicants, not quite sure of the exact number), so it makes sense that more people are waitlisted.

Also, people's lives change every day. Someone who may think about attending Smith in January may change her mind by April. I see nothing wrong or unethical in keeping one's options open by applying to various schools. College is such a major decision that people may want to apply to schools they may not want to go to just in case they change their minds and decide they do want to go there.

I still think Lisa has a good point - even if you consider the practical side and the practical side alone. I personally don't see why anyone would want to pay a $60 application fee if they never planned to attend if accepted. It's one thing to apply to several schools and have a choice, and a completely different thing to apply knowing you won't attend.

TDM, I agree. The whole point of having 3000 colleges to choose from is not having to apply to any college you don't want to attend. The down side of this is that when the acceptances come in it should be hard to make up your mind.

True, Mardad... I applied to five schools I would love to go to. If I get accepted to more than one, it will be hard to make a decision...

My status on BannerWeb was changed this morning. Previously, under "Decision" there was a link to my wait list letter. Now it has changed to "Please Contact Admissions Office." I called and left a message...but am still waiting to hear back from them.

Do they always take the letters down, or is this unusual?

My daughter was waitlisted too - I just checked her BannerWeb site, and it now says the same thing (Please contact....) ... which either means something or nothing!

Yeah I called the office around 9am (CST) and have been waiting to hear back from them. (I'm at work and it's seriously impeding my ability to get things done - being tied to the phone).

Would it be overkill to contact my admissions person by email?

I don't think one email would be overkill.

Okay I talked to the Admissions People. They seemed to be unsure why "Contact..." was posted, but positive that no decisions had been changed.

Oh well. Thanks for posting. Good luck!
