I know schools like stanford only do snail mail while Harvard e-mails decisions. What does MIT do? I didn't request anything special. Plus, if we assume Pi day decisions, will i get the e-mail on Pi day or when people usually receive their snail mail (assuming they do emails)?

Old fashioned buddy. You get it in the mai, reject or accept...

how bad is it to get waitlisted? a strong waitlist...weak one??

for MIT, they never run out of people, so their waitlist was just a big fat lie.
which means---------when yu are waitlised, you are screwed.

i c.....................

you never know, this year might be a year they go into the waitlist. After all, they are trying to limit the class to under 1000. they might be more cautious about how many people they let in.

The most recent Common Data Set for MIT is for the freshman class entering in 2003. (http://web.mit.edu/ir/cds/2004/cds2004.html) In that set of statistics we find numbers perhaps reflecting the higher yield MIT has been seeing in the last couple years:

Number offered a place on the waiting list: 491
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 427
Number of waitlisted students admitted: 0

(In 2002, 37 waitlisted students were admitted. In 2001, 122 were admitted. In 2000, 131 were admitted. So in recent years it's been getting harder to get admitted off the waiting list. See here for all the Common Data Sets available online, if you're curious: http://web.mit.edu/ir/cds/)

For those of you who yearn for e-mail admit notices check out www.clearadmit.com for the Harvard, Stanford, MIT, CMU. and more business school decision hack.

We only do snail mail for the first week; if you haven't received your decision after a week (i.e. by 3/18) then I believe you can call. Decisions will not be given over the phone in the first week though.

I believe that we will take some students from the wait list this year, although I can't say for sure, nor do I have any idea how many...

Hey Ben,

Waitlisted students are more like admitted people, but no space, so they were placed on a waitlist? or not on par with what MIT anticipates, so they are placed on a waiting list and they are admitted afterwards in case the yield somehow decreases?

Thanks.

Everyone on the waitlist is truly awesome and would be a wonderful addition to MIT... it's really a matter of space.
