Decisions decisions! Ah!

Hello!

Now that I am no longer waiting on any schools, it's time to make a decision! I'm weighing pros and cons, and I was hoping I could get some additional opinions from anyone who's willing to give one/some! I'm thinking about double majoring in biology and animal science since I want to become a vet. Here are my choices with their pros and cons:

Rutgers NB:

pros = relatively inexpensive since I'm in-state; seems to have everything I'm looking for (I went to their SEBS admitted students open house and found out everything I needed to know)

cons = really ugly campus, and maybe a bit too widespread (I know, that sounds really horrible and superficial, and to some people it doesn't matter, but I don't feel very "homey" there like I do at UDel...I feel like atmosphere affects my attitude, and attitude can make a huge difference...am I thinking too much into it?)

UDel:

pros = lovely campus and college town; I've heard (*keyword=heard) that it's a great school and they have a great pre-vet program (is it better, equal, or not as great as RU's though?), however, I don't know as much about the program as I do RU's program; huge farm

cons = pretty expensive

UConn:

pros = huge, beautiful farm; I don't know enough about their program and academics to eliminate them from my list or compare them to RU and UDel

cons = pretty far away; not quite as cheap; too isolated

UMass:

pros = cheapest school for me (only by $3,000 though); same as UConn, I don't know enough about them to compare; they have a 7-year vet program I can apply to

cons = pretty far away

I think RU and UDel are tied for first place on my list. I'm supposed to visit UMass, since I haven't yet, but it would be a 2 day trip, and I feel like that's spending too much time and money into a school I may not go to. Do you think it's worth the visit? Which do you think is the best choice for pre-vet?

Thank you so much!

I do think you should visit UMass since it has the 7-year vet program. You may find it has everything you need at a reasonable cost.

Is UMass actually cheaper than Rutgers? Did you include the “fees” which are not part of the tuition or room and board? Any of those schools will prepare you for Vet school. Vet schools are expensive and vets generally don’t make much money (certainly less than doctors). Limit you undergrad costs as much as you can.

UConn has the most reputation followed very closely by Rutgers. Udel and UMass are cool too. Decide between Rutgers and UConn and maybe Udel.

Yep! UMass is cheaper because of a scholarship I received.

Thanks everyone! I thought UDel was ranked higher, but I guess not! Between RU and UConn, it would definitely be RU for me.

How big is the price difference between Rutgers and UMass? (UMass - Amherst?)

I’ve heard of many people who ended up going to Rutgers because of the great (and cheap!) education, and, though many didn’t really like it much initially, they were all really glad they went there by the time they graduated.
just my two cents. I’m sure it doesn’t apply to everyone.

I don’t know much about transferring, but is it possible to go to Rutgers and then transfer to UDel later to save some money?

In my opninion UConn is best regarded followed by rutgers and then UDel, I personally see UMass as an average school, but not good

@ucbalumnus There’s about a $3,000 price difference. And yes, UMass Amherst.

@stressedouttt and @zzlombard Thanks! The more opinions the better! I just really want to be able to enjoy my college years. I don’t want to pick the wrong school. Then again, no one does haha

@stressedouttt I want to try to avoid transferring because I’ll lose any friends I have made and not all credits may transfer over; there’s a high chance of complications that I’d really rather not deal with haha

I’m going to visit RU again this weekend, and hopefully it will aid me in making a decision :)

Note that UMass - Amherst is in a college town with four other (small) colleges nearby (with cross registration agreements). https://www.fivecolleges.edu/academics/cross_registration

You may want to check into the costs of vet school and the job and career prospects to see how much attention you need to put on keeping costs low (to avoid debt and save money for vet school).

Here is a great NY Times article you should read about the cost, and pros and cons of becoming a vet -
