UConn vs UDel vs UMDCP vs Rutgers.. Ahhhh

Yup. Huge state schools :D
I really don't know where I want to go.. help!!

Campus:
I'm visiting UDel on Saturday, UMD next Friday, and UConn next Saturday, so I'm hoping the visits will assist in my decision. (Rutgers, I've been to MANY times)

Major:
I'm undecided for all the schools except for UMD, where I got accepted as a bio major. I want to be a dentist, but apparently, I'm not very good at bio... sigh

Special Programs & Scholarships:
UConn - no honors but 12k a year
UDel - honors and 11k a year
UMD - scholars and 2k a year
Rutgers (in-state) - no honors but 3k a year

Other factors:
I got waitlisted for Rutgers Pharm... do you think if I get in, I should just enroll there?

I'm asian, so I kind of want to go to a school where I can make lots of asian friends.

I'm not really big on parties.. eh

I want to be able to live on campus all 4 years (so UConn is at a disadvantage with this one haha)

If I had gotten into honors for Rutgers, I would have gone there, but alas, things didnt work out too smoothly..

Pleaseee, does anybody have any advice/tips/opinions/suggestions?? :)

Anyone? Anyone at all?

I can only speak for the University of Maryland, as I live near UMD and attended graduate school there.

UMD has a lot of Asian students, so I think you will not have problems making friends.

It’s not easy to get into the biology program at Maryland as an OOS student, so congratulations.

UMD only guarantees on campus housing for freshman year. If being able to live on campus all 4 years is very important, you may want to look at University of Delaware and see if they can guarantee 4 years of on campus housing.

Good luck.

I can’t comment on the academic aspects, since I know nothing about the bio/pre-dental/pharm-type programs at any of these schools. The visits will definitely help you decide.

Last summer, we visited all of these schools with my son, who is a senior this year. Rutgers he found to be too big and too spread out (although it might make the most sense for you financially, being in-state), and did not apply. He also thought UMDCP was too big, and ended up not applying there. He loved the UConn campus itself but felt the location was very isolated (there’s the campus, and then … not much else), although he did apply there and got in. He loved the UDel campus, it’s beautiful and the Main Street area has a real college town feel. We’re going back to visit for Accepted Students Day next weekend. His decision is between UDel and UMass Amherst (our in-state).

If finances are an issue, UMD is going to be your most expensive option, obviously. UConn and UDel will be about the same–you got $1,000 more from UConn, but it’s at least that much more expensive than UDel OOS. I think acceptance into the Honors program is a point in favor of UDel. If I had to predict, after your visits, you’re going to love UDel!

I just came back from a UDel visit. The campus was beautiful but a bit too small for me. I thought the campus was kind of like the campus that people usually vision as a typical “college campus”. There wasn’t much going on on campus (probably because today is a Saturday), and the surrounding neighborhood seemed pretty empty too. And um… if anyone’s wondering, from what I saw today, the majority of the students, there, were white females. They were all very pretty though. Oh, but the dorms… well, I guess no college has great dorms. I looked inside a freshman dorm in Russell Hall C, and it was “Z” shaped (that’s what they called it). It was small (I mean, I guess it’s the typical size for a freshman dorm) and the lighting was a little weird (yellowish-green?).

Although UDel is a great school, I decided that it’s not really “my” school. I can cross it off the list now! Yay! I think I’ll cross UConn off my list too…, so I’m left with Rutgers vs UMD… :)

@ldwendy
Thank you! I’m still a bit iffy about being a bio major though, so when I go on the UMD visit next week, I’ll be sure to ask how easy/hard it is to change majors.

I did some research on UMD dorms, and apparently their dorms and food are the 2 things that most students complain about… ahh what a let down…

Do you know how difficult or easy it would be to find housing off campus?

@hornetdad
Ahh I guess I’m different from your son. I think I like bigger campuses than smaller ones (although I’m not a big fan of the bus transportation at Rutgers either).

Yes, the honors program played a big role in my considerations; it seems like a great program!

Thank you for your input & good luck to you and your son! :)

Dear AimingHigh1:

Apologies for not noticing your response to my post! I am going to subscribe to this thread…

As for finding off-campus housing here’s a web page from the University of Maryland Off-Campus Housing Services:

Also - A new apartment complex has open up right across the street from the Route 1 entrance to UMD.

not sure if that would interest you, but it’s a thought.

How did your visit to UMD go?

Keep us posted.

The inferior schools (UCONN and Delaware cost more - so get them out.

It really comes down to Maryland and Rutgers. I would take the cheaper option and the honors. As an honors student you just get more opportunities/better and smaller classes.

I would have to agree with Sistokid. If you like the bigger campus, Rutgers in-state is the way to go. Looks like my son may be doing the same thing, at UMass Amherst. Good luck!

ldwendy, you don’t have to subscribe to this thread because I have made my decision! RUTGERS!!

I actually decided Thursday night, when I received a mail from UMD telling me that I was placed in my second choice for scholar programs! The only thing that was REALLY pulling me towards UMD was the Life Sciences scholars program, and once I found out that I was placed in a different program, I was free to choose Rutgers. :)

SISTOKID, haha I wouldn’t call uconn and delaware inferior; they’re just not the right schools for me :P

I know, that was my way of thinking until Rutgers decided not to place me in the honors program… -______- grr (If they had, I would have decided to go to rutgers, a month ago…haha)

hornetdad, Yes, I’m going to Rutgers!!! Oh, two of my friends chose UMass as well! Congrats to your son!

They’re all great schools, but I guess I’m going to Rutgers. No regrets, hopefully! Thank you all!!! :D

Congrats, AimingHigh1 for selecting Rutgers!

Going to UMD as an OOS student is pretty expensive, so I understand your line of thinking. If you don’t mind my asking, which Scholars program did UMD place you in? Thanks.

Congratulations, Rutgers is a great school!

UCONN and Delaware are inferior to Rutgers and Maryland in every facet.

Congratulations Rutgers is a fine choice.

They placed me in the Environment, Technology & Economy (ETE). :)

Thank you everyone!!!
