decisions...

I'm kind of under crunch time for making a decision, because I need to inform one program by a week from tomorrow.

I'm very torn in deciding where to go to school. I have been accpeted to Harvard, Yale, UNC (Morehead-Cain/Honors Program), Georgetown SFS, Duke, and BC (Presidential Scholars Program). I was waitlisted at Princeton.

I know that I am interested in studying international relations, and probably persuing a career in human rights (right now considering human rights law). I also want to study languages in college, especially Spanish, Arabic, and French.

I think that I have mostly narrowed down the list to Havard, Yale (leaning towards Yale of those two), and UNC (once in a while I wonder about SFS, though)

I guess I could just use any input...The Morehead seems pretty hard to pass-up, and I love that I could get started working internationally right away. I think I am leaning towards that right now, but I am having a lot of trouble making a definite decision.

CC regular eadad can talk very eloquently about his son’s experience with the Morehead-Cain. His son turned down Yale, and had a great experience at UNC-Chapel Hill with the Morehead.

Harvard and Yale are obviously great schools, but they aren’t going to offer you the summer or academic-year experiences of the Morehead-Cain. In total, the Morehead Foundation provides over $28,000 in additional research/travel support for each of its scholars on top of the fully-funded UNC education.

Clearly, you’re an accomplished individual. I think the Morehead-Cain has the potential to provide you with the resources (financial and otherwise) to create an undergraduate experience far superior to that you’d have anywhere else, including at Harvard/et al.

What is most important about college is what you DO while there. And, quite simply, programs like the Morehead-Cain and Robertson (at UNC/Duke) enable you to do some extraordinary things.

thanks, thoughtprovoking.

anyone else?

What are the financial offers at Harvard, Yale and SFS?

barely anything…$6000 in loans, I think. My parents say to make the decision first without thinking about the money, though obviously it’s hard to ignore, and depending on what I choose we could talk about it later. My parents would probably take the loans, but I would obviously have to work.

I’m also wondering about a comparison in the academic climate between the three.

^ I’d choose the UNC deal. You’re saving a LOT of money.

Could anyone comment on the differences in the academic climate between UNC and Yale?

It’s really important to me to be in classes with people who enjoy learning for learning’s sake…While I am happy to be at a place where people have a life outside of their academics (! of course !) I would also like to be somewhere where people continue talking about a class discussion after that class has ended, or discuss academic topics, at times (not always!) outside of official schooling.
