Hello, I’m an incoming Freshman for the Fall 2015 semester. I want to major in Freshwater/Marine Biology Masters (currently in UGS). I’ve just now been prospecting on minoring in geosciences (looking to get into deep sea oceanography). I just had this thought today and have spent a little time looking through CNS and JSG for information on declaring a minor in a different College, but havent gotten any solid information.
Anyone that has declared a minor in a different college, HOW did you do it?
Don’t quote me on this, but I think all you have to do is take 5 or 6 classes in the minor you desire. I don’t think you have to declare or anything like that.
You don’t declare a minor. Just take 6 lower division hours and 6 upper division hours of classes under the minor you desire and that will be your minor.
I asked my advisor a few years ago about declaring a minor and she told me that the rules for a minor at UT depend on the college of your major as opposed to the minor. She also said that CNS doesn’t do minors. However, this was around 3 years ago and I don’t know what, if anything, has changed. I would honestly ask your advisor on how declaring minors for your major works and how that works in terms of whether or not it is something that will show up on your transcript because I took way more than 6 lower hours and 6 upper hours in a field outside of my major and it was not recognized in any way other than the fact that you could look at my transcript to see the courses I took and would be able to piece together that I took a lot from one specific department.
