Please be considerate to the massive amount of kids on the waitlist and let your schools know you ARE NOT COMING so kids can get in from the WAITLIST. Thank you!! Good Luck and congrats to all
People need to take more time to decide now more than ever.
Unless someone knows 100 percent that they will not be attending a school, my advice would be to wait it out. As it is, many schools are even extending the enrollment date through June 1st. In addition, some schools might even increase financial packages or merit scholarships in order to protect the yield. These same schools are aware of the potential of losing some of the brightest or best students. There are a lot of uncertainties including the possibility of schools extending the current format due to the virus. The month of April is going to be a very big month for both students and colleges.
I agree with @NJCity & @1917souci. Because we will not have an opportunity to visit the campuses that we did not get to visit earlier we really need to research and look at things much closer. I am even hoping for an opportunity to perhaps visit/drive through a campus later in April if the opportunity becomes available. Also given what’s going on now, will have to look at financial offers, not just for freshman year but longterm. It may actually take longer to decide than it otherwise would under normal circumstances.
I agree, but most kids have 7-15 schools it seems, so I think at this point we should hopefully have that list down bit, so if you know one school is not getting a lot of love from either your kid or the FA office , cut it and spend the extra time on the schools still in the running. My son took Temple’s fox school of business off his list bc FA gave him nothing and the value for him as a OOS was not there so he withdrew. I agree it will take longer this year but when a school is off your list decline that spot , lets do our part to help the anxiety of the class of 2020.With some schools extending the timeline that will also extend the waitlist time as well.
@NJdad07090 - Yes, I agree with you, we were narrowing it down today but because of some unexpected decisions our entire plan was thrown off.
@Sarrip - my main point I guess is once you decide a school is not gonna make the cut decline the spot do not wait until May 1 and have them just figure it out. I think we will have another 2 schools done by the end of next week, waiting on aid packages , if they come in where I expect them to both schools will not make the short list and he will decline his spot.
@njdad - I understand what you are saying. I’m agreeing with you.
My point is if you KNOW you are not going then tell them. Many people on here applied to 20-25 schools and got into most of them. It is not a game. if you are certain you will not attend PLEASE tell the school. Be considerate.
It’s not a one-for-one exchange. The schools expect a certain number of declines, so until they reach that number I doubt they’ll start on the waitlist.
They probably have a yield estimate for each admit. For example, a given admit may be estimated to have a 25% chance of matriculating, so s/he counts as 0.25 student added to the class. Other admits may have difference values based on their estimated chance of matriculating. Once the admit decides, s/he counts as 0 (declined) or 1 (matriculated). The college can keep a running total size of the class (and perhaps subsections of the class based on major or whatever categories it cares about); if it is looking too small, it can start using the waitlist.
A similar calculation and running estimate for the class can be made for tuition yield.
yes, it just annoying when you see the same people all over every post who have got in 22 out of the 25 they applied to. there is no way all 22 are in contention. There are a lot of kids on 10 waitlists waiting for you to decide so please let the ten you know you will not go to know.
100% percent agree , while there is no guarantee any school will use the waitlist, there is really no downside to telling a school your not coming march 28 vs just not sending a deposit may1 or June1 in some cases, if it is off your list , tell that school thanks but no thanks, and maybe that kid on waitlist gets a shot.
Although students are not obligated to proactively decline their offer (S18 didn’t do it and I let it slide), I believe in this admission cycle, it would be good thing to do for both waitlist students and colleges. I asked my daughter to consider it and she declined four colleges this morning. I admit I feel a bit sad that one of the California schools she declined was secretly my favorite.
agree! we have let al schools we are not coming to know out of respect for this hard time
Well in the spirit of things DS20 just declines 2 schools today so hopefully 2 kids will get accepted off of waitlists.
