Declined admission but app to stay active?

I was accepted into my top school, but due to financial issues I am not able to attend. I sent in my formal response form and chose the option I could not attend. I recieved a letter that states they have withdrawn my application, but my application will remain active for a year after the term I was admitted to. What does that mean?
I would love to go there, but they are getting rid of the degree I want. Does that mean the degree might still be an option to me? Would I have to reapply? Maybe these are moronic questions, but I really have no idea what the protocal is.

Thanks!

You should call the admissions office and ask them what it means, exactly. It may mean that they’ll still take you next year if your financial situation allows you to attend.

I have emailed them, but they haven’t gotten back to me yet. I was just wondering if anyone on here had any experience or insight.

Right, but Hunt suggested calling them because you’d get an answer much faster that way. (Or, you know, so I assume. I shouldn’t presume to speak for Hunt.)

I’ve never heard of such a thing. Which is why you really should just pick up the phone.

I know you young people don’t like calling, but in this case, you should call.

I agree. Calling on the phone is really better in this kind of situation. If possible, call the person who signed the letter.

You mean I have to talk to a real person?!? UGH.

I don’t mind calling, it’s just difficult to call during their business hours because I work full-time and have lunch at the same time as their offices apparently. I can’t answer my phone if they call me back either.

Is this really that unusual? I think I may have encountered this a few years ago when I applied as a transfer but decided I didn’t like the school. I never followed it up because I realized I had no interest in the school I declined admission with.

@2redhares: I recently got something like that, too, from Northwestern. I declined my acceptance and they sent me an automated email saying that they’ll keep my app until one academic year, should I decide to transfer to NU. To my knowledge, it means that they’re going to reactivate your app if you apply as a transfer, and just use your scores from the freshman app. Getting admitted as a freshman will probably work in your favor, but not by much. (I got this by gathering some info from past years’ answers)

Hope that helps :)

I was admitted as a transfer.

But basically, I just have to inform them that I want to attend and when. I will have to update my portfolio and such for merit aid by the deadline- I was given merit aid this application, so I don’t have to do anything other than that to apply for it again.
