Hi I want to apply to Deerfield, possibly Lawrenceville and Andover, and those other top schools - still have to decide them. But Deerfield is just my dream school so here we go.

I've gotten 96 and above on all my schoolgrades throughout the middle school years (except once I got 94 on art, I'm slow and I'm a perfectionist :( ). In school, I'm part of the community service club, student council (i'm a class representative), ski club, french club, select choir (soprano), jazz band (sax), and I'm captain of the girls field hockey team. I'm the elected vice prez for NJHS and I was in gifted for 6th and 7th grade, but it's really boring to me so I'm quitting for 8th grade. I'm sure I'll get good recommendations, though I've never talked to my principal before. I'm in the honors math class (alg II) and I've always made the honor roll. I'm also in French II.

Now outside of school: piano for 8 years and swim team in winters. My passion is dance. I take lyrical (advanced class, I'm one of the youngest ones), ballet, and jazz, the last two for 9 years, lyrical for 5 years. I've never participated in piano competitions, but I've performed in many concerts, one of them a community fundraising one, and I've won trophies and ribbons in swim team - nothing too big. Maybe I'll send in a piano CD? I went to CTY this summer, I help in the soup kitchen every Saturday, I'm in Girl Scouts (past 4 years), and yeah that's pretty much it. :)

Let's say I score 90 and up on the SSAT and I write a really good essay. Soo, chances? Btw, I'm white and I'll need lots of financial aid. Thanks (:

Good luck! I’m a Deerfield student at the moment, and though I’ve never “chanced” anyone before on CC, you do seem like the type DA is looking for nowadays. I would suggest meeting with your principal and making a connection with him/her so that he/she knows a little bit about you and your motivations.

@mixedupsydd,
I’m a rising eighth grader myself, but I know a lot of people who have gone through the boarding school admission process. You seem exceptionally qualified, much more than I am. But to get into top tier schools it’s not all about academic qualifications. I know a girl who got straight A’s, got a 99 on the SSAT, who was denied at all top tier schools. And I know a kid who got A-'s and didn’t score as high on the SSAT and now attends the Middlesex School. (Another top tier school which I suggest you apply to) The person who goes to Middlesex wasn’t as strong academically as she was, but he was a very strong soccer player and that year Middlesex needed a good soccer player, I guess. But putting all that aside, you seem like an extremely qualified applicant so good luck! And btw I’m applying to Andover and Deerfield too.

You seem like a well-prepared applicant who really knows what you want. Your stats are up to par with other prospective applicants and you have many ECs that show how dedicated you are to your various interests. Continue to study for you SSAT and impress your teachers so they can write you good recs!

You really seem like a great applicant and some of you stats are way better than mine and I was accepted, however I do come from a different school system and I didn’t apply for FA.

But I must warn you there are ppl out there with the same or better stats that weren’t accepted. A good score on the SSAT (85+) won’t set you apart even unless u get a perfect score, that would set you apart. But don’t let me discourage you you should definitely have a shot otherwise something’s wrong.

What it really comes down to is the interviews, essays and EC’s they are the only part that can show them who YOU, no one’ll interview exactly like you, write exactly like you or have the same EC’s. This is were you NEED to set yourself apart and if you don’t you may have a real probelm. You seem to have really good EC’s but also quite a lot of them I suggest that you maybe should do some cutbacks there focus on the ones that you’re really good at, for example I saw that you were a class representative in the student council if you don’t plan to run for president or VP then maybe that should be one of the EC’s that you should maybe stop participating in, the schools prefer quantity over qulity. That being said you seem really qualified and ONLY quit EC’s that aren’t your strongest ones if you have plenty of really strong ones ofc you shouldn’t quit some of them.

You may think that your recommendations might but really for the students that apply to these schools the teacher’s says pretty much the same thing about everyone and a lot of it is just putting crosses in boxes (more stats and numbers, note that your stats and numbers will not set you apart unless they are EXTRAORDINARY and we’re talking 100% scores and all excellent recommendations etc. But even then it’ll only give you a small push, stats will just show them if you are up for it)

Wow thanks so much deerfieldswede!! You kind of wrote an essay for me haha. About my EC’s - I love all the out-of-school ones, but sometimes the school things do get kind of hectic, so I’ll cut back on a couple more like you suggested. Some of them don’t take much time at all - for example, vice president of NJHS, ski club (they’re only a few trips in the winter), etc. But thanks :)
