Deep college essay

Hi,

I wonder if its okay if one of my college essays is a little deep and philosophical. Are the readers really tired lazy bums(as portrayed by Harry Bauld in his book) who wouldn’t care about my essay and be annoyed, or will they appreciate something provoking?

They always appreciate something unique, different and provocative.

Yeah but cut the philosophical part. If you try to tackle an element of life, it's pointless; they'lle laugh and throw your application into the pile of kids who played the violin for four years.

And make sure the essay talk about YOU and only you. If you still want to be philosophical, make sure the philosophy shows how it revealed something about YOU. The focus of the essay is to present YOU and your character, not you're philosophies.

A lot of times philosophy can come off as hackneyed and pretentious, even if it is well-written and logical. Stick to more tangible, personal matters.

No, its not one of those corny hackneyed ones.

I'm trying to write about some thoughts I had lately, completely original.

Do what is true to you. If you like to think about issues and create your own opinions and thoughts about them, that is a unique aspect to you and is worthy of noting in your college application.

Be true to yourself, your ambitions and what you honestly believe is right for the essay. Write it in a style that is uniquely your own. The only precaution I have for you is to attempt not to sound pretentious as most philosophers can and do.

Best of luck with the essay.

I think they always like an interesting essay. If by deep and philosophical you mean boring then it really doesn't have to do with them being lazy. Note they are reading thousands of essays; do you really think lazy enters into the picture? Or are you too lazy to write an interesting one? Also you should be sure to factor in that deep and philosophical to a teenager can be trite and shallow to an adult. As far as in college entrance essays, you can be pretty sure they have heard it all before.

write what's true to yourself

Yeah, I got one of those Ray Bradbury thoughts that I thought would it nice to put into an essay

Thanks for the advice
