Hi! I’m new around here, but have been “lurking” for a while. I was recently accepted at Deerfield but haven’t gotten anything in the mail yet. I live close by. Has anybody else gotten a letter or a package, and if so, what was in it?
Thanks!

I heard about the green and white M&M’s - if that’s happening this year, then I’m super excited!
Also - does anybody have any experience with their revisit days?
Welcome to Deerfield! I assume they’re still doing m&ms-- they’ve done that for years. Comes in mail, totally separately from anything else, a few days later than paperwork. There are 3 revisit days. First you check in, and I think there’s a performing arts program you can sit in on. You spend the day shadowing another student-- classes, lunch, etc. Parents observe different classes (I think) and go to a couple parent panels ( on academics, on student life). At some point, you come back together and I think there was a joint panel with lots of students (10?12?) talking about their experiences and answering questions. Then there’s an activities fair-- all the coaches, arts people, club representatives have stations around the room and you can go talk to them. If you have a super-big interest in something ( maybe water polo, based on your name?), you can always contact the coach ( or whoever) ahead and set up extra time with them, or see if you can watch a practice or a game or something. If there’s something else in particular you want to see that you haven’t seen, ask the student you’re shadowing, or one of the many admissions people to get you there that day. Remember-- you can relax now and really figure out what YOU want to see and the questions YOU want answered. And have fun.
Thank you so much, @Daykidmom! This really helped. I signed up for one of the revisit days just now. I’m just super excited for all the paperwork and candy
Hey @Daykidmom: Do you know anything about Deerfield’s music program? I’m seriously considering attending, and I’m very serious about an instrument and want to make sure I can do it there.
Hi everyone! I’m a senior at DA now and I just remembered this account…
Music is awesome at DA. I took lessons during the class day in piano which is open to everyone. There are practice rooms in the new arts center and lockers for instruments. There is also a concert hall which is beautiful. During the day there is also an orchestra class and a band class which can be taken for a grade or pass/fail. The band or orchestra performs at many school meetings. Music is great at DA!
If anyone has any other questions please ask!
What instrument do you play and what kind of music, ilovewaterpolo?
Thank you so much, @Ehphant! That helps a lot.
@Daykidmom, I play the flute and I prefer classical music. I already have a private teacher close by, but I’d love to get involved in larger group settings.
Music at DA is great. I don’t know much about the private lesson teachers, though most people seem pretty happy. There’s an orchestra that meets once a week in the evening with a broad range of players, and a chamber orchestra that meets on another night with more advanced players. Both include winds and sometimes piano. The chamber music class (totally includes winds-- trios, quartets, etc.) meets every day 7th period (so it doesn’t interfere with sports), which you can take p/f or for a grade. There’s a music service ℅-curricular which you can do in the afternoons INSTEAD of sports (you can do it as much as you want-- one, two, or 3 trimesters, depending on your sports interst) which gives you a block of time to practice everyday and occasionally goes out to perform in the community (nursing homes, soup kitchens, etc). There’s also a classical music club. Right now the chamber orchestra, choral group, and top couple of chamber groups (quartet, quintet) are on a concert tour of Asia for 2 weeks (Seoul and Hong Kong). There are lots of singing groups as well, as well as other types of music (band, jazz band). There are performances by all groups at DA, some off-site for some groups, and they bring in occasional professionals to conduct master classes. There are also occasional concerts in the concert hall by professionals. There are also a couple of nights a year that everyone comes and it’s like an open-mike music show-- individuals, groups, anyone can play, anything they want (rock, jazz, classical, etc). And, of course, there are some classes (AP music theory, etc.), listed in the catalog. I’ll PM you some details.
Thank you so much, @Daykidmom! This really helps!
