Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

Do the dorms have air-conditioning?

@bibliophile33: [Technology FAQ for New Students - 2010](http://danet.deerfield.edu/organizations/index.cfm?action=org&ID=89&spot=5&folder=3224&display=3646) See item 5, where iWork 2009 is included.

Also, dorms do not have A/C, so most students bring fans.

@bamagirl95: Girls cross country is good, but not great. They had a young team last year because of injuries. Thereā€™s one girl on the team, who was injured early in the season, that would have been top 7 on the boys team and won the girls New Englandā€™s last year. Sheā€™ll be back this year.

As with many sports, updates are sent to parents and students and results are not always posted. You can always check their schedule and search their opponentā€™s site.

The girls came in 6th out of 11 Division I schools at New Englandā€™s last fall.
Thanks! To be honest, Iā€™m kind of surprised by the times; I assumed that prep school sports would be more competative than my public school league. How are the courses up there?

Well, bama, the NMH course is very hilly and there was a torrential rain storm that day, so the course was also very slippery.

^Are you talking about Northfield Mountain or the course at NMH?

Itā€™s the course at NMH, which was new last year.

I received my schedule yesterday.
I was thinking about dropping Acting in order to have 2 free periods.
DO I NEED 2 FREE PERIOD AS A FRESHMAN OR 1??

Take acting. Freshman year is an ā€œeasierā€ year and a great time to try new things. One free period is fine. Classes do not meet everyday, so you wonā€™t necessarily have 6 classes each day anyway.

I still havenā€™t gotten my schedule yetā€¦ Did you get it in the mail, Lindha?

Also, I was actually considering classes. Iā€™ll be going in as a new sophomore, but I already took both Chemistry and Biology as a freshman (our school sequence is Biology->Chemistry->Physics), which I think qualifies me for both jr./sr. physics I and AP Chem. At first, I was leaning towards physics because I thought it would be easier and I didnā€™t want to overwork myself the first year, but now, Iā€™m leaning more towards AP Chemā€¦ Iā€™ve talked to the science department, and they said the choice was up to meā€¦ Anyways, if I do decide to switch, can I do it during the first two weeks of school or do you think it would be better if I contacted the school now? Also, how hard is AP Chem? I know itā€™s double periods and all that, but how hard is it?

I will be a freshman and I received my schedule by mail.
If you do decide to switch,u have to make that choice within the first week or ull be stuck with it for the rest of the term.
AP Chem might be hard to you and easy to others or VISE VERSA. So the choice is yours because you are the only one that know yourself welll and how capable you can handle things.

Question: has anyone received his/her dorm info? I havenā€™t got mine yet.

Iā€™m just curious, what do yā€™allā€™s schedules look like?

My d hasnt gotten her house assignments yet. From what I remember, the Academy said it would be mid-August, thus lets hope this week :-).

I havenā€™t received my dorm assignmen yet. I will forward you my schedule.

Hi, Iā€™m a current DA student, and this is right, you wonā€™t get your dorm/room assignment until mid to late August.

@twoā€¦would you mind sharing some stories about house life. My d will be a new 2nd yr student. I think I am more excited about her assignment than she isā€“lol.

(Nerd alert: I bought very pretty draw liners, scented in factā€¦it took my d all she had not to fall out laughing. When she looked into my very serious face, she said that I could line her drawersā€“this time)

ā€œDonā€™t cry for meā€¦ā€(you know the rest of the song) :-(

Sure! Dorm life is my favorite part of school. No matter what hall you live on, youā€™ll end up making good friends right there. This past year, as a junior, I ended up living on a hall with my four best friends and a few girls I hadnā€™t really known well before. It ended up being the best hall Iā€™ve had yet.

As for dorm life stories, at night, after study hours, we used to sit in the hallway and just talk for hours about the most random things, and weā€™d all bring out food and have a little buffet on the floor! You get really close to the girls on your hall if you make the effort to.

Can a current dA student tell me if the sports are coached by teachers or hired choaches. Donā€™t worry, either way I want to go, but just extra info. Also, is it hard to meet people cuz you donā€™t have a roomate? I know most dorms are singles. But also do most people participate in sports? And can I do varsity jv as a freshman? Sorry for the overload of questions the website is just generic info.

The sports are mainly coached by teachers, but there are one or two sports that have hired assistant coaches. Meeting people really isnā€™t difficult at all. By the end of your first year, you honestly know almost 100% of the people at the school (not necessarily by name, unless youā€™re really good with names, but by their face). And yes, almost everyone participates in sports, but if you donā€™t it doesnā€™t automatically make you a ā€œloserā€ or antisocial or anything like that. People say Deerfield revolves around sports, which can sometimes be true, but rarely. I myself was never really a huge sports player, but I am definitely a huge fan so I am definitely athletically involved without actually playing any sports. And yes, you can play on varsity as a freshman, for sure, you just have to be good and the coaches have to be impressed by you obviously.

Not a problem  Thatā€™s what weā€™re here for!

BUMP! Bam bumpier bumpbump! Yaaaaaaay!
Sorry CC kept telling me I needed more lettersā€¦
