Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

<p>I’m coming in as a new student, and I would like to ask:</p>

<ol>
<li><p>Does the school provide a school planner/organizer?</p></li>
<li><p>Are there any items that is not on the DAnet packing list that the students need or would be really helpful?</p></li>
</ol>

<p>Thanks!</p>

<p>Don’t know if this has been noted before, but one of the characters on Mad Men (Pete Campbell) makes references to having gone to Deerfield. In the most recent episode (8/22), he gets a business lead though “one of his Deerfield chums”.</p>

<p>narwhale…you can buy planners at the campus store. The list is pretty complete. Bed risers are a must, but you can get on campus. Some people get futons, but some also have them confiscated due to fire code issues. They will be a lot tighter on refridges in rooms next year (get that Dr’s note).</p>

<p>For those who have not checked recently, your dorm assignment has (finally) been posted on DAinfo.</p>

<p>7Dad, knowing the level of the moral virtues held by some of the characters in “Mad Men”, do you think it reflects well or poorly on DA to have one of these men portrayed as a “Deerfield man”? Do you think that Mr. Boyden would have appreciated that reference if he were watching that show (assuming that he would even watch it in the first place were he still with us)?</p>

<p>Do they have Math, Science, and Debate Clubs at Deerfield? I couldn’t find them on DA website.</p>

<p>Schedules are up on DANet</p>

<p>can anyone tell me about the dorms for underclassmen? what are the dorm stereotypes? traditions? which dorms are the “nicest”? which have the best location?</p>

<p>can anyone tell me about the dorms for underclassmen? what are the dorm stereotypes? traditions? which dorms are the “nicest”? which have the best location?</p>

<p>@Invent: yes we have very strong math and debate teams. we usually get some kind of big awards (the head of the clubs announce at school meetings) we also have science olympiad club and in the winter they compete for MA state olympiad. since this is a fairly new club (4-5 years), we haven’t seen great results compared to math and debate teams, which have been at DA for many years. however, i believe it will get better.</p>

<p>@joexxo: there really aren’t any dorm stereotypes. I can explain the dorms to you, but first of all, are you a girl or a boy? It’s difficult to tell on CC. And which dorm are you in?</p>

<p>@joexxo: (i’m assuming you are a girl since you played portia in julius caesar)
here’s a link to dorm histories: [Dorm</a> Histories :: Deerfield Academy](<a href=“http://www.deerfield.edu/campus/535/Dorm_Histories]Dorm”>http://www.deerfield.edu/campus/535/Dorm_Histories)
before i give you my opinion, please keep in mind of few things:
1)like twopod said, there aren’t any stereotypes because the dorm environment changes every year because there is always a new batch of students and there might be new faculty residents as well.
2)there isn’t the “nicest” or the “best location” dorm because everyone has different definitions of “nicest” and “best location”
3) i have lived in harold smith (fresh), poc (soph), and mather (senior)
[current DA students: if any info’s are incorrect, please feel to correct me]</p>

<p>here are the girls underclassmen dorms (there are 6): Ashley, Davenport/Chapin/Bewkes (now bewkes because of the donor), harold smith, mather, mcalister(mac for short), and pocumtuck (poc for short)</p>

<p>Ashley
-one of the smallest dorms (only uses 2nd and 3rd floors)
-home style rather than long hallway dorm style
-furthest away from Koch center
-near john louis (girls upperclassmen)</p>

<p>Bewkes (can’t tell you much since they made it a dorm after i graduated)
-one of the smallest dorms
-used to be office/guest house (so interior is nice)
-near louis marx (boys upperclassmen) and pocumtuck</p>

<p>Harold Smith
-one of the smallest dorms (2 floors)
-built in 2002 so very new (don’t judge by its cover seriously)
-spacious/home style common room
-rooms are like the ones in john louis
-near dinning hall/greer/bookstore/baseball field/athletic center/john williams (boys underclassmen)
-across the field, there are library and koch center</p>

<p>Mather
-middle size dorm (2 floors)
-long hallway dorm style
-common room in the basement with huge tv (great for rockband/tv marathon)
-right across from scaife (soph boys)
-just cross the main road, there are main building, classroom building, arms building (aka easy access to academic buildings)</p>

<p>McAlister
-one of the biggest dorms (3 floors)
-long hallway dorm style/3rd: slanted roof & attic style, but longer rooms (in terms of length compared to square rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors)
-near athletic center/baseball field/barton & field (boys underclassmen)
-does a lot of activities with the boys dorm (bbq, frisbee…)</p>

<p>Pocumtuck
-one of the biggest dorms (3 floors)/very similar structure as McAlister
-long hallway dorm style/3rd: slanted roofs & attic style; some maybe smaller than others
-near scaife, bewkes, louis marx
-the mix of grades has been different over the years: one year we had fresh, soph, and juniors, one year was just fresh and soph, one year was just soph and new juniors, one year was just sophs</p>

<p>i hope this was helpful.</p>

<p>can you share something about the upperclassmen girls dorms? thanks :)</p>

<p>hows scaife 1?</p>

<p>@CCer999: scaife is the boys dorm of mather. the outside look is different (mather is more like a barn looking dorm and scaife is just like a yellow house), but the inside is exactly the same. the common room in the basement is less nicer than mather’s so scaife boys used to come to mather to watch tv, play games. also, scaife used to be all soph boys, but i guess they changed it. </p>

<p>@exoveerotch:
for girls upperclassmen dorms there are: Dewey, John Louis (JL for short), Rosenwald & Shumway (rosho for short)</p>

<p>Dewey:
-the smallest upperclassmen dorm (2nd floor only)
-above the health center, which can be a pro and a con (snacks at night - sick people coming in)
-below the summer storage space, which is an attic (great at the end of the year)
-in the past health center used this floor for patients, so rooms are slightly bigger than regular dorm rooms and there are doubles/triples
-small common room at the end of the hallway
-near denunzio (boys upperclassmen) and rosho
-near physical plant (for picking up big packages)
-across from dinning hall</p>

<p>John Louis
-one of the largest dorms
-all singles
-built 1998, so very new and design is top-notch both inside and outside (one of my favorite buildings at DA)
-divided by north and south so 4 floors (2 floors north, 2 floors south)
-1st floor has huge common room that connects north and south
-on each floor, there is a little common room, great for group study/hang out place/eating takeouts
-furthest away from Koch center
-usually junior girls live there and its great for juniors since they can study without any distractions
-near louis marx and johnson-doubleday (both boys upperclassmen)</p>

<p>Rosenwald & Shumway:
-one of largest dorms
-like JL north and south are connected by a common room, so are ro and sho (but connected by two common rooms 1st and 2nd floors), but rosho doesn’t have a little common room on each floor like JL does
-2nd floor common room has glass window that gives you a great view of the campus and on the other side you can look down to see the 1st floor common room
-rosenwald has 2 floors and shumway has 3 floors (all singles; 3rd shumway has 2 rooms, which have been double or triple in the past years)
-compared to JL, it’s older dorm so rosho is more conventional dorm style building
-2nd floor rooms (both ro and sho) have high ceilings
-rooms have extra storage space above the closet/door
-in the past, most seniors have lived here, but that could have changed (since the dorm lottery system).
-ro is on the dewey side, sho is on the dinning hall side
-near denunzio, dewey/health center, dinning hall, physical plant</p>

<p>*as i mentioned in the previous post, Pocumtuck tends to have mix of grades and it has been different every year, so upperclassmen may live here as well.
*fyi, i lived in rosho my junior year</p>

<p>Hey, When I signed up for courses I signed up for the two term art course and then the philosophy to get them out of the way but on my schedule both on paper and online these courses aren’t shown, only the five primary courses as well as 2 free periods are shown. Should I go ahead and call DA?</p>

<p>By the way TheGreenMachine, you’re right, it is mostly sophomore boys, there are only two other freshman in my dorm.</p>

<p>by the way, is anyone here in Scaife 1?</p>

<p>@ccer999</p>

<p>Most kids at DA take 5 courses per trimester. Taking a 6th for credit requires a 90 average and permission from the Academic Dean. However, many artsy types take a sixth pass fail in drama, music or dance ensembles.</p>

<p>I’m really feeling Deerfield right now. The admissions video made me fall in love; even moreso when I got the viewbook! DA and SPS are neck and neck for my number 1 school. Anyway, former/current students, how do new sophomores/juniors do socially? Academically? I will most likely be entering as a repeat sophomore, but I’m not sure. Any advice would be great.</p>

<p>well, i’m far from artsy but I wanted to take the art pass/fail to get it out of the way for grad requirements.</p>
