Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

Thanks. Do colleges prefer you to take a specific class such as Asian Civ compared to getting a 4/5 in a class such as AP macro/micro or similar classes?

What?! That’s a question for your academic advisor – after you get into Deerfield, or where ever.

ohhh werrddd? Im currently in public school, our counselors could give 2 ****s about the students

Just a little tidbit of info, in the new book The Ivy ut mentions a smart pretty girl who went to Deerfield for highschool.
So far thy have not named any other schools.

not to ruin the discussion going on here but Exeter beat Deerfield 3-2 in field hockey (;

With about 400 more students to choose from, I would hope Exeter is a little better at most sports

that doesn’t necessarily mean more athletes you realize that right?
I think Deerfield is much more athletic based

Gab-why do you think DA is more athletic based than Exeter. More focus on sports? I didnt get that impression, but I am seeing it as a parent of a dancer not athlete.

Even though I am a three sport athlete, I got a very strong vibe that Deerfield was most focused on sports, especially lacrosse and it seemed as though the athletes kinda “ran” the school

Gab–since my d has only been at DA for 5 weeks I have limited knowledge, but my d didnt/doesnt that vibe. She is not an athlete at all but a classical ballet dancer. She has said that the kids that play sports are nice (went to a soccer game today DA(2) NMH (0). She says they are very supportive for the kids that dont do sports.

The non-athletes are very supportive of teams especially when a girl/boy on their hall is playing. I will admit that the school spirit is awesome, which for us is something we wanted in an bs experience.

As my d claims all the time
“We bleed GREEN”!!!

Does anyone have any questions about DA?

Hi Ccer999, Do you have math, science, debate clubs? Do they go to competitions? Is there faculty support in training the students for competitions or the students have to train themselves? Do you know how many students are involved in each of these clubs approx.? Is DA strong in humanities or math/science or both? How do you like the math and science classes? Thanks.

Is Deerfield stressful so far? Was it hard to adjust / make friends?

Gabiiwoz, you are correct, school size doesn’t always mean dominance [look at Bridgton]. But, in general school size does matter. That’s why the leagues are split into different classifications [Class A/B/C]. I agree with your impression of DA. We visited a lot of schools including Exeter. Our first impression with DA was, you better be an athlete to attend. That’s not entirely true obviously, but that was our impression.

Alexz825mom, Yes, school spirit is awesome. After that girls reserve game, the people shifted to the boys varsity game. Another example: when our child finishes their game, the team is usually running, not walking, to spectate at another game and cheer their friends on.

Polodolly, of ALL the schools we visited, including the ones we now visit because of our kid’s away games, DA has by far the friendliest kids. My spouse attended a different HADES school, so its not as if we knew anyone at DA. And, I admit to being an unattractive looking person. That doesn’t seem to matter at DA. At first you think it’s just for show; but then you realize everyone really is friendly. I don’t know how they admit a student body like this. It is real easy for kids to make friends at DA.

It’s really easy to make friends if you’re a likable person. If your not very social, you can be sure to have a decent amount of friends. Uhh, personally I don’t find it very stressful, it is very manageable. You have between 1-3 hours a night of homework, which really isn’t that bad and I’ve almost always finished by study hall. The hardest part about Deerfield, or any boarding school, I think is how you are always busy and don’t have much free time.
Do you have math, science, debate clubs? Do they go to competitions? Is there faculty support in training the students for competitions or the students have to train themselves? Do you know how many students are involved in each of these clubs approx.? Is DA strong in humanities or math/science or both? How do you like the math and science classes? Thanks.
Yes, yes and yes. Yes, you can pretty much go to any competition you ask about as long as there is minimum interest. The faculty are very dedicated to their respective club/activity. They go far out of their way to arrange things.DA isn’t really a specialized school, it’s good at all subjects. Math classes are challenging but not too hard; they do force you to think. Science is quite interesting, my physics course has no textbook, you write journal entries almost every night on the concepts you learned from the day’s lab and that’s pretty much your textbook. I like the classes.

How is water polo in DA?
Do they recruit water polo players?
I heard water polo program is relatively new in DA.
Does anyone have any information on coaches, players, which colleges the players went, and etc.
Any comment about water polo in DA would be greatly appreciated.

WoPo is alive and well at DA. Boys and girls usually end up near the top of the New England Prep league. Have sent players to D1 through D3 schools. May have recruited PG players in the past. Check out the schedule, summary and coaches on the the deerfield website under on the team.

How are the Humanities (English, History) and Math programs at Deerfield? I like to know if most of your teachers are inspiring and dedicated. What do you find special about these programs? Thanks.

Humanities and English are phenomenal, and Math is taught exceptionally well, you will always understand the subject matter and if not the teacher will make it very clear. Of course the teachers are very inspiring and dedicated. Many teachers have been here for 30 years or more. I would say the majority have been here longer than 10 years. English is 100% discussion and history is almost completely discussion as well. It really teaches you how to articulate yourself and express your point.

Ccer999 - any idea what pecentage of DA students are from manhattan?
