Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

For Manhattan (not all of NYC), its about 9%.

I am assuming you mean 9% schoolwide not in each incoming class.

Actually, the percentage of students in the entire school from the NYC area is 9.7%.

Not sure, but there’s a ton of people from New York and the Greenwich area.

I thought DA was an extension of the Southern Fairfield County School District of CT.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

ops - can you clarify? Didn’t grasp that being I am not from Ct.

Nothing against DA, just get the impression that many of the students come from S. Fairfield County in CT, such as Greenwich as previously stated.

Some kids who list a Manhattan address have multiple homes and don’t really live in NYC, but for some reason choose to list that address. But there is a large percentage of kids from the NYC area. If we expand the definitoin of ‘NYC area’ to include the Greenwhich CT area, and then Westchester County to the north, it’s over 20% of the students. Not really a surprise; that’s the largest concentration of people in the northeast.

@ops: I currently attend Deerfield. Yes, there is a prominent population from Fairfield County, but it is not fair to say your previous statement. It may have been in jest, but Deerfield tries very hard (and does a good job) at creating geographical diversity.

Hi cm33, How strong are the Humanities (English, History) and Math departments at Deerfield? By that I mean the quality of the faculty and the rigor of the courses? Is there a math club and what competitions do they go to?

Humanities are extremely strong at Deerfield. I lean more towards the history side of the spectrum, and I have never been disappointed with my teachers. My english teachers have also been absolutely fantastic! I am not a math person in general, but there are some gems there. Like any faculty at a school, there are your good and bad teachers, but I think the good ones here are great.

In terms of Math Club, I am not sure. I am pretty sure that we compete in a Western Massachusetts competition, as well as a national one (if we qualify), but I am doing this solely off of memory from two years ago. I know there is a science club (Science Olympiad) that is well publicized and meets regularly though.

Hope this helps!

I am asking this from a self proclaimed math nerd perspective, the sports and dance/art is great for the others, but I wonder if this would be a good school for someone who religiously lives by math, are there advanced courses for kids who’ve already taken calc BC in sophomore year? also as far as writing my app, see the below, I understand exeter and andover are a better fit for me, somewhat disappointed at the physics program in deerfield, again please tell me if this is the right fit for me, based on below as well

Hey I’m a sophomore, applying for Uppers in 2011-12 season, and I am really worried about not getting accepted. I understand it’s an extremely competitive grade and year, but nonetheless perhaps you can help me in figuring out what they want,

I am both extremely academic, self studying 9 AP’s, including Physics B, Chem and Calc BC, and teaching myself programming, I am also doing USAMO (math olympiad) and would love to have Mr. Feng teach me,

now that you have a math nerd image in your head running, i am also very active politically, and have won awards in Debate, Model Congress and enjoy regular columns in journalism about politics, I have also started my own political platform, and am looking to have a interesting affect on the 2012 elections,

in the past, I was born 100% deaf (still deaf with cochlear implant) and so many things like social interaction and swimming, as well as public speaking were hard, I joined scouting and worked my way up eventually being in charge of 80 boys at a time, and then joining camp staff. I also did Mile Swim twice, 50 mile canoeing trek and am regular public speaker, so these are my personal ways of overcoming my challenges .

So what is exeter primarily looking for? Academic, character? Potential? Creativity? Most likely it’s a combination, but I’d like to show why I am unique from most other candidates, as I am doing these things because I have a sincere passion and not padding my app,

Thank you for reading this!! Take care!

Honestly, I firmly believe that a “fit” at a school cannnot be determined over the internet through a few qualifications. If you are really concerned about it, come to Deerfield and speak with the head of the science and math departments. They’d be more than happy to speak to you!

From my knowledge about math at Deerfield, I know one of my friends takes BC calculus now as a sophomore. We have many other advanced math classes, so that is not a problem. Our course listings can be seen here: [2010-2011 Course Catalog](http://issuu.com/deerfield/docs/course_catalog_2010-2011_5.18.10_?mode=a_p&wmode=0)

In terms of sciences, I am not exactly sure what you are looking for. Physics has many different levels, as well as Physics Projects, which is like research class that many people enjoy taking.

Clubs-wise, we have a very active debate club, Model UN club, Science Olympiad, and many others.

Hope this helps!

Hi ca33, Do you know the faculty sponsor of the Science Olympiad Club that I can contact? Thanks.

I realize that this has probably been asked a million times on this thread but I’m kind of freaking out right now. Is Deerfield really generous with financial aid, even to students who may have higher income but come from a larger family?

@shushugah: if you’re going to cross post to the Deerfield thread, at least change the references from Exeter to Deerfield in your text. :-;

@Invent: if you haven’t yet, visit Deerfield. The Koch Center is an amazing facility. Jaw dropping, really.

@polodolly: that’s a question best answered by your AO. You might try one of the online FA calculators, such as what’s on SPS’s website. IF Deerfield wants you, they’ll make sure your family can afford it, although that’s true for any of these schools.

The admit rate for 9th graders last Fall was approximately 9%. I don’t know how many legacies are in 9th grade, but overall the admit rate for legacies was about 45%. That indicates that being admittance as a non legacy is quite selective. I’d work towards being admitted first, then worry about the details afterwards.

DA is an Amazing place.

I didn’t change my cross post, because obviously exeter has those things with the olympiad coaches and extra programs, and I wonder if deerfield does, which Im doubtful of,

compared to groton, choate how does it rank? also answer about it’s science, will help multiple posters on this forum

What are the average SSAT percentiles for Deerfield?

shus-I am in agreement with cmurry, if you want more particular information contact the science and or math department and ask your specific questions. All schools welcome questions and concerns and try to be honest and open about how they can address your needs. During the time that we were inquiring at different schools, AO’s made honest suggestions to where they thought my d might “fit”. They helped us find “matches” according to what experiences we wanted her to have.

How a school ranks is minor when you are at this level school. No school is perfect for everybody. Rank is really not important if you dont get in. View the schools in terms of what you think you can not only get but what you can give.

angela-When last reported, DA’s ssat was 87%. Check out Boardingschoolreview.com for information on all the schools.

@Alexz825Mom- Thanks!
