Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

Are Int’l Asians well-integrated into the Deerfield culture?
From some student reviews, it seems as if the whites are in a clique, the Asians in another, and the blacks in yet another.
I’d really love to make a couple of great white friends during my stay in Deerfield, but is that even a possibility?

Thanks!

bump.bump.

@geek, I think a lot of that would have to do with if you really define yourself by your culture. If you want your culture to set you apart, then you will be viewed in that light, but personally, as an Asian American, I’ve never particularly identified myself by my race (which is neither good or bad). I have no problem talking to people of all ethnicities. Granted, growing up with two different cultures influencing you tends to make you indifferent to all of it, but I would think that if you really wanted to be outgoing and meet EVERYONE, then there would be very little to stop you.

A 9% acceptance rate for ninth graders? Man, I really liked Deerfield…

WHAT? oh goodness, where did you hear that? :frowning:
i heard that intl FA applicants had like a 8% acceptance rate or something, too. yikes.

@DiveAlive,
The user alextwoofour posted it above on this page. And, I heard the same about Deerfield’s intl acceptance rate. But, I had no idea about the ninth grade acceptance rate. Imagine what the ninth grade FA acceptance rate is… Damn! Thinking about that depresses me :(

I had a question about the Sophomore Writer’s Craft English course – is this a catch-up class or a course for more advanced students? The Course of Study is unclear on this (“departmental selection required”).

Writer’s Craft is an optional course offered once a week for those that want to improve their writing. The student may request the course or a teacher may recommend the student. Scandling is the teacher and he’s excellent.

Thanks! For the junior humanities class (American Studies), how is the workload compared to single-course English and History courses? Deerfield offers such a nice variety of junior English classes that it may be a better for many students choice to keep History and English separate; unless of course there are clear gains from the synthesis if the two disciplines. How long has Deerfield offered this interdisciplinary class (HIS311)?

Studies as the class is known, is a popular class that sophomores apply to enter junior year. Last year there were reportedly 40 applicants for 18 slots. It is a double period course, team taught by two of the most respected teachers in the school, one a History teacher, and one an English teacher. The workload (reading and writing) is significant and active class participation is required. It studies US History with US literature used almost like a primary source for the time frame being studied. It is a different approach, popular primarily with humanities oriented kids. There is only one class per year, so most juniors take the separate History and English options.

1012mom - thanks for your helpful answer. Would you (or others know) how many years of science are actually required for students entering Grade 9, 10, or 11? The Viewbook (which the Course Catalog points to; Viewbook under “Diploma Requirements” on pp. 41-43) simply states “2 years laboratory science”, which is very general.

There’s no entry requirement, just an exit requirement. In the unlikely event a student has not taken physics, chemistry, or biology before Junior year, they would have to take two sciences their last two years.

Please help me get this straight:

Student 1, entering Grade 10, has already taken Physics and Chemistry (say, a repeat Grade 10 student, or someone very strong in math & sciences). In her 3 years at DA, she would therefore have to take: [how many?] science classes.

Student 2, entering Grade 11, has already taken Bio, Chem, and Physics. In his 2 years at DA, he would therefore have to take: [how many?] science classes.

In both cases, I am not asking electives or personal interest, but the firm requirement by the school.

(n.b. Both are hypothetical “sample” students for DA’s academic path)

Student 1: No more science required to graduate.

Student 2: No more science required to graduate.

Most schools only require two years of science for their graduation requirements. Also, this is only the minimum requirement.

Hi! I’m realllllllly interested in Deerfield! I want to apply next year as a repeat 10th grader(most likely). I would need like full FA.

I’m kinda smart(I’m in 2 classes that are meant for students a year older than me; math, which is also a honors class. Also, I am taking science for people a year older, and honors Global history) My grades in middle school were great, all honors and high honors. Except, I failed french with a 55 one quarter in 8th grade, and got a 69 one quarter in science in seventh grade. Other than that, my grades were all high 90s. I also picked up my grades in both classes. I have grades in the 80s this year, and it’s because I procrastinate. I have already started improving my grades, and I know I can get most likely a 93 average or higher. I know I can get a SSAT score of 90ish. I run cross country, indoor track, and track. I think I will have a great interview because I have a long time to prepare, I am extremely bubbly, and have great charisma. I was just wondering if I have any chance at getting in your school, and if you have to have straight A’s to get in.

Sorry for posting a chanceish post, but I wanted to know from people in the school!

Do you guys know anyone with alright grades, but not perfect?
How is the cross country team?
Do you guys have good school spirit, it’s important to me.

(1) This is not an “official” Deerfield forum. If you want to get info about your chances from Deerfield admissions officers, you’ll need to contact them directly.

(2) If you want to know what other Deerfield students (and applicants) think about your chances, there’s a sub-forum just for that, called “Prep School Chances.” If you post your question there, you’ll probably get a quick answer!

Good luck!

Please share DA decisions here.

WLed :stuck_out_tongue: class of 2014

I hope you get off the WL, Dive. May be FA is something to do with it. Good luck on others.

It’s the regular mailman’s day off, so we received the mail an hour and a half earlier today. Son accepted to the class of 2015.
