Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

soccer345: All new students are assigned a MacBook (not Pro). You own it after three years, but the school will continue to support it while you’re still at Deerfield.

Deerfield posters: Try to use this thread rather than creating hundreds of unique Deerfield threads. It will be easier for others to benefit from the information shared here.

Yeah just to echo CKSABS I think it’d be best for the forum if Deerfield posters stick to this thread, so people don’t have to wade through 10-15 different DA threads with specific questions that can all be answered here.

i’m attending deerfield as a 9th grader in september 2010 and it seems so far away :frowning: I’ve been talking about Deerfield every single minute the past few days…

I’ll be going to DA as a junior, if I get a Mac at the beginning of my junior year, do i have to return it when i graduate, since it’ll only been 2 years?
help plz…

exoceeroch: I did not pay attention to who owned a computer after 2 years as it did not apply to us. It should be in the “Back to School Resources” under the ITS section when available. There appears to be an update to Moodle (the Intranet) on Tuesday, so hopefully that information will be available again. Stay tuned…

DeerfieldSwede: Congratulations! Revisit days are April 1, 5, & 6. [:: DAnet Calendar ::](http://danet.deerfield.edu/calendar.cfm?month=04/01/2010)

I do not think you have to return to the computers, although I am not 100 percent sure. The IT section of the website/the information that comes in the mail regarding IT will probably be more informative and helpful.

Are you expected to write a small note in the letter that you send back to the Dean of Admssions & FA that tells her how honored you are to be accepted and thank them for the effort they put in the application. I know it’s nice and all but if they don’t read it really seems like a waste of time.

Also should I request an I-20 form to be filled in or will they do that automatically when they receive my deposit??

I think the admissions dpt. would really appreciate a note but I can’t tel you it’s expected. They’re very nice people from experience and I think that’d delight them.

As for the I-20 form I honestly have no idea.

My understanding is that shortly after you accept (and send your initial payment), Deerfield will send you a SEVIS generated I-20.

gr8 thnx CK

Could you explain, “co-curricular”?

My d is a dancer, but what like to “try” a couple of sports.

I realized from the course descriptions that you can take dance for credit, 6th course pass/fail??

Just a confused mom—lol

How’s Deerfield’s fotball team? I’ve heard a lot about the lacrosse team, the water polo team and the swinm team however not so much about the football team also are there any classes in the Academy building?

Football not soccer

the football is okay not great they were 3-5 last season and got killed by choate this is their results [Schedules & Scores :: Deerfield Academy :: an independent, coeducational boarding high school](http://www.deerfield.edu/athletics/index.cfm?page_id=105&sport=7)
being a freshman and not a recruit you will most definitely be on the JV team unless you have football experience or a huge freshman

Comin in as a sophomore. I’m quite tall and muscular 188 cm and around 175 lbs. I used to play football and I was quite the talent but I quit 2 years ago due to the fact that the coach made his brother quarterback although he was the worst guy on the team I think you realize what happened to our results… -.- also Football is a very small sport in Sweden and the team other than my former one is a 45 minute DRIVE away. Well I’ll try and see how it goes just wanna play some football again :D

@Alexz285mom A cocurricular is a student’s activity reserved for the block after classes and before dinner. The block is 1 hour and 45 minutes long. Dance, Theatre, Athletics, and Community Service are your standard cocurricular options. The play’s rehearsal, your daily sports practice, dance rehearsal, community service outing, etc…These take place during that block.

You sign up for new cocurricular each term. Deerfield, being split into three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring) sets up the cocurriculars accordingly. Each term Theatre does a different play, Dance has a showcase, and different sports are available.

Fall Boys Sports: Football, Soccer, Water Polo, Cross Country
Fall Girls Sports: Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country, Volleyball
Winter Boys: Wrestling, Squash, Hockey, Basketball, Swimming/Diving, Downhill Skiing, XC Skiing
Winter Girls: Squash, Hockey, Basketball, Swimming/Diving, Downhill Skiing, XC Skiing
Spring Boys: Lacrosse, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Crew, Cycling, Track & Field
Spring Girls: Water Polo, Softball, Golf, Tennis, Crew, Track & Field, Lacrosse, Cycling

You can also do rec sports as an upperclassmen (some take underclassmen), which are much more laid back and are also seasonal, or Special X (lifting, fitness basically).

Nearly ever cocurricular has a bottom team that you cannot be cut from - so if you want to play a sport, you do. I believe Crew is the only exception.

Inspired by DeerfieldSwede’s procalamation of this thread’s death, here’s a bump.

I know that second-visit day is approaching pretty fast so if there are any questions, I can do my best to answer them.

nice to see the thread alive again, well this question is actually mostly to stroke my ego  but do you know when the acceptence rate for 2010 will be realesed?

I got a personal postcard from the admissions, and they say this year was just above 14%, so GREAT JOB!

GreenMachine: can I play sports that I have never played before at Deerfield? i REALLY want to try downhill skiing (!!!), swimming/diving and squash, but I basically have never got my hands on them before. Is it ok for me to do that? I mean I’ll work really hard… thanks
What grade are you in right now?

NICE!!! :D

I can teach u the skiing part =P I’ve been skiing in Sweden and the Alps for almost 14 years about a month every year. I used to compete in Super-G and Grand Slalom, I took a course how to teach young kids to ski and I’ve been a tutor for two of my parents best friends kids in Verbier, free of charge of course. Although now I’m so sick and tired of it so that I can barely get up in the mornin’ when i’m supposed to ;). And yeah i think u can although u’ll probably have to do it as a rec activity check out http://www.deerfield.edu/athletics/index.cfm?page_ID=109</a> for more info.

However I’m quite jealous of that card, I haven’t gotten anything personalized from DA :(, however Milton sent me a ton of that stuff.
