I was deferred from Dartmouth ED, which sucks, but could it could suck more (if I were rejected.) I am wondering what is a better scenario, being put on the wait list or being deferred.

Apples vs. oranges. Deferral happens to EA/ED applicants. WL happens to the entire RD pool. Deferees can eventually become Waitlisters. The lists serve different purposes. One can’t say one is better than the other. However, both are better than being rejected: that’s a fact.
