Was just deferred from Davidson....anyone else going through this? Advice?
Would really appreciate replies from people who were deferred but then accepted.
My GPA and SAT scores aren't the problem I think....both well within the Davidson averages.
Thanks

I am a current Davidson student. I did not apply ED but I was initially wait-listed regular decision. My GPA and ACT were both high for Davidson and my extra-curriculars were decent. Davidson is very small and has many more qualified and talented students than they can accept. Don’t take your deferral hard, it clearly shows that they are interested in you as they could have simply rejected you. Try demonstrating interest, possibly visiting again or meeting with professors in fields you’re interested in. Don’t give up, Davidson is an amazing school and community. It’ll all work out for the best, wherever you end up.

Davidson '12 grad.

I agree with bobbydole.

I always had the impression that Davidson appreciates interest. If visiting is an option, that’s the best way to go about it. Otherwise, a brief(!) email to your admissions counselor expressing your continued interest in Davidson might be appropriate, as well. I would guess that heavy recruitment is mostly over and that the admissions office is spending their time reading applications by now, but if they have recruitment events in your area, it’s a good idea to attend if you’re available. Same to online events. When I was a student, I participated in student life “Cat Chats” through admissions–it was basically an admissions-sponsored chatroom in which prospective students could ask current students questions about their experiences at Davidson. Participating in these sorts of chats would be another way to demonstrate interest.

Wishing you all the best through your application process. If your first choice doesn’t work out, don’t lose heart. Sometimes that means there’s a better fit out there–that was my experience, anyway.

My daughter was deferred last year and was accepted and loves Davidson. NYC metro area. Here are some tips. 1. The letter indicated to express interest if still interested in late February, early March. Do that . How? Do not write a canned letter. Indicate why you really want to be a Wildcat- be detailed. 2. Find out the Davidson representative for your state and at that time also establish a rapport by email. Do not nag and do not write until late February and early March. 3. Have your guidance counselor lobby for you with the state rep. 4. If you can find a Davidson graduate in your area that will meet and/or have coffee with you, do so. Request a recommendation letter. Davidson does admit deferred students but wants to know you truly want to attend Davidson. Many deferred students will ED2 other colleges so you will not have to compete with them. Bottom line- you can be admitted but must be persistent. Good luck- my daughter loves Davidson.

So I was also deffered my SATs were a little under average probably a 100 points under and a GPA of 4.4 my grades were good last year but they want great so what I’m doing is academics and more volunteer hours. They basically are interested in us but they need us to show motivation to be admitted. Write to them in February and just show them you are dedicated and will improve.

definitely demonstrate interest, maybe even contact local admissions staff
