Deferrals Unite! What's next?

I'm praying for an acceptance, but the defferel at the nation's top university (second MAYBE to Harvard) means that I have a good/ok chance at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, UCLA and Berkeley. I'm really happy about how this is going. I didn't really have a shot at Stanford (in my head), but now I know that I have a glimmer of one. I worked really really hard for my 1440, and I'm proud of it. Just thought I'd put that out there...

yeah kara, I was expecting deferral, if not rejection, after reading people's stats who already got rejected. So deferral was a HUGE relief for me, maybe just because I'm freakishly optimistic and think there's still hope. Which there is, for all of you guys. So yeah. Tis a happy day! Life's still as fun as ever. Too bad we have to write more essays for them. Damn those essays.

See, that's the thing.... I have a 1490, which gets me in the running, but doesn't separate me from the crowd. My SATIIs are better now because I retook them in November (Stanford didn't see them in time for SCEA), but at the time, my physics score wasn't that great (lol, you actually have to study for those?). I've read one of my recommendations, and it said a lot of nice things about me, but it didn't mention a lot of specific proof. I don't have any ECs that really separate me from anyone else (tutoring, NHS officer, volunteering at nursing home, chinese school, school plays). I have 2 writing awards and a few math contests. I DO have great grades, but so does everyone else. I DID spend 8 weeks taking classes at stanford over the summer, but a lot of my more qualified friends from the summer were denied.

What did I do right?

The only thing I can think of is my essays. I had a few people read them and they said they were charming, creative, and passionate.

Stanford can’t deny someone with a flawless resume and defer someone else with a mediocre resume but great essays, can they?

Sorry, I’m not usually this self-doubting, but my friend’s rejection really gave me a case of “why me?”

sigh

Is there anyway to turn off my brain?

I didn't get my decision yet but I'm pretty sure that I got deferred.

Kara1987- I definitely thought I wrote a great essay too but I dunno what's with the random admissions process. Some of my friends had great ECs and essays but still got deferred. I went to Stanford summer thing too. Where are you from?

forever21-- cool! Go Lagunita! G G G Unit! I'm from Granada, the dorm that never sleeps! I stayed in G130

what about you?

i went to the stanford discovery institute for creative writing (the 3 week program), back in summer 2003. I chilled with a bunch of 8-weekers though, and dormed in lagunita. (the lake that doesn't exist...) Man, those were some of the best days of my life.

lol! yea the lake. on the first day, i was walking around looking for lake lag, and someone had to tell me, "um... dude. you're in it."

I really do think there is a gender discrepancy.
Every guy at my school except me was rejected. I was deferred.
One girl did get in with no spectacular EC's (good grades, maybe great essay). Another was deferred with absolutely no ECs (just grades)

I don't think so... So far, more boys than girls from stanford summer have been accepted.

sidewinder77 - There is no gender advantage b/c it's 13% admission rate for both genders

kara1987 - Heh I stayed in a pretty quiet dorm but it was nice. I mean it's Stanford, the weather is amazing. I'm tired of the east coast.

I'm totally excited to have been deferred. I thought I'd be rejected. I think it's cool that they are at least going to reconsider my application! I have a 1490 now, but they probably judged me off of a 1430 because I got the 1490 in November. We should all hope for the best and be proud that Stanford thinks we are good enough to be given another look.

Hey, in our deferral letter, it said that about 10% of deferred Stanford SCEA applicants got in regular last year. Isn't that acceptance rate lower than the overall 12/13% acceptance rate?.... So it's HARDER to get in as a deferred than a regular applicant, or what?

I don't think the fact that someone is deferred decreases their chances. I heard somewhere Stanford just mixes the deferred apps with the RD apps and the deferred status doesn't affect the decision. It just happens to be that the competitiveness of the deferred pool is slightly less than the competitiveness of the RD pool as a whole (including deferred students).

Actually, now that I think about it, the 13% includes EA. EA has about 20% acceptance, so RD must have less than 13% to average it out. So 10% acceptance for ALL of RD would not be unreasonable, especially since there are more RD applicants than EA applicants, so 13% is closer to 10% than 20%.
