Deferred Admission?

I applied to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign a while back. I recently found their online system where you can check your application status... So I logged in, and found out it said something like "Not all materials received". So I called them up, talked to an admissions counselor, who promptly told me that they had everything they needed and that I'd get a decision by the end of April.

So, the next day I checked my status and my application status was changed to "Complete ready for review."

And, about a week later, I checked again... And I saw a new field. I'm not sure if this was there or not before, but its there now...
"Decision: Deferred - Manual Review Req"

The application status is still "Complete ready for review."

Now, what I'm wondering is... Does deferred mean that they denied me, or does it mean that they haven't decided yet?

It appears that you were borderline for their 'auto-admit'/'auto-deny' procedures and so need a human being to determine your fate, but I have no idea how the campus handles decisions.

You should be getting a post letter if it's a deferral (as in, you won't get your decision until our next round), but that seems odd to me. It just looks like you have to wait a little longer for a final decision.

Yeah, deferred just means that your app has been reviewed, but they're waiting to make a decision. They want to compare all the other borderline apps again to see which ones should be rejected and which should be accepted. Deferrals aren't to be confused with waitlistings.
