Deferred at Brown and Georgetown; what do I do?

Today I got deferred from my two top schools. I dont know whether to be happy that I wasn't denied or upset I wasn't accepted. I mean I guess I expected to get rejected from both but still I feel like this is a pity deferral as in they have no intention of accepting me they just felt bad by denying me straight up. Any thoughts?

Yea, apply to some schools with higher admittance rates. What did you like about GT/Brown, and do you have any financial constraints?

yeah I mean all of my other schools are 30% and up and I got into Northeastern and UVM recently but I just dont know whether to look at being deferred as a good thing ya know

Don’t worry about it. My friend got into Princeton, Harvard, UPenn, and Cornell but was flat out rejected from Brown. Some schools are just reaches no matter how good your stats are. As long as you have safety schools, it’s all good.

haha wow yeah you’re right. Everything happens for a reason

Isn’t brown ED? How did you apply to georgetown as well?

Anyway Brown seemed pretty capricious/brutal this year, and georgetown is getting Spammed with EA applications. If I were you I would’ve done like Dartmouth ED or something (they were pretty generous this year).

AT this point you may have to lower your sights to perhaps Wesleyan Swarthmore Amherst, etc

Deferred means its not over unless you want it to be. Now you move into the next phase of the application process: 1) top grades for senior year 2) an update in the spring with any additional honors and awards and 3) a heartfelt statement of why school X is your top choice. If the answer is still ‘no’ then you will at least know you gave it your best shot. Meanwhile, there are lots of great schools out there still waiting for your application.

Either your GC was sound asleep or could not read:

Brown never really denies ED applicants; its “defer” is really just a polite “deny,” though. And you definitely violated G’town’s EA policy

Make a plan b that you would be happy with, but follow your dreams everything will be alright.

with a 3.5/<2000, you better set your sights a whole lot lower than Swat and Amherst. :)

i agree with bluebayou. The person who said “lower your sights to Wes and Amherst” was not speaking very accurately, or shall I say the “lowering” would be minimal. Amherst had an 11% acceptance last year to Brown’s 9%–almost the same, and the SAT/ACT 25%-75% are almost identical too.

yeah no worries guys those were REACHESSSS my next top choice is like Union College and Holy Cross. You guys have any ideas on state schools though cause I wouldnt mind adding one or two so far I have Bing and Geneseo

Cost constraints? Any programs you’d like it to be strong in? Would you prefer it to be in a rural location as Bing and Geneseo are, or a more urban location like Brown and GTown? Would you prefer East Coast, or consider anywhere in the country?

Whenhen: Yeah I mean I aspire to become a physician to I dont wanna drop 40+ ya know and I know pre-med isnt something a school could be strong in so I guess the sciences as a whole. Deff gotta be on the east coast from like VA to maybe Maine but I dont mind an Urban campus as long as its somewhat distinct. For example I love Brown as it has a true campus even though its in Providence however I hate NYU as it just doesnt feel like your at a college ya know?

If you live in New York SUNY Buffalo

Just want to mention that you violated both Brown and Georgetown’s ED/EA policies. That’s really not ok.

@marvin100:
Students do get denied at Brown ED. Just look around the Brown forum to see so. And being deferred is not a “polite deny;” I have multiple friends who were deferred then accepted. Brown really doesn’t need to care about people’s feelings - if they don’t want someone, they’ll just reject them.

I dont know man I thought Gtown just recommended that u dont apply to other schools I am sure others did though and same for Brown. I am not going to not apply to other schools on the SUPER slim chance I had at getting in ya know

Not to pile on, eagles14000, but see the excerpt from Georgetown’s website in xiggi’s post #8. I’m commenting not so much for you but for others who may read this thread in the future: If you are going to apply early decision or early action to a particular school, read and understand the relevant policies. If you don’t understand what you read, ask someone. The words “may not apply” suggest something stronger than “we do not recommend.” It doesn’t matter how “SUPER slim” you perceived your chances to be; you violated the terms of these schools’ policies.

you’re right at the information session it did not seem that strict but yeah I screwed up. If I did somehow manage to get into Brown I dont think it would have made a difference though in terms of withdrawing my application from Gtown.
