Deferred at CW

I agree @Mickey2Dad that no Optional essay is ever optional. And we don’t treat them that way ever. Thanks for the advice. I am going to encourage my D to be very specific with the details she provides as she answers the prompt.

Yes. My son is writing thr optional essay and applying for 2 scholarships. More essays!

My D is also applying for scholarships, @ambkeegan - the deferral has provided lots of motivation! And I think all of those essays give admissions so much great information about the students even if they don’t get the scholarships.

Does anyone know how long Case has had EDII? I am wondering how ED II will affect those applicants who have been deferred from EA. I think 2 EDs makes it harder for EA and RD applicants.

I believe they start to do ED in the 2013-14 cycle. They have both EDs then, as I recalled. That said, ED rounds for Case have not been a “hotbed” of action. Based on available data, in the 2016-17 cycle, 358 applied with 143 accepted (total enrollment for the class - 1264). EA applications been in the 10,000+ area for 2016-17, and 2017-18 cycles. I think yield is going to be a huge factor on how many Case will accept in the RD round. If the yield from the EA round is significantly better than previous cycles, Case could accept significantly less in RD round, and put many applicants onto the wait-list. In 2016-17, Case placed 9293 applications onto the wait-list (with 10200 EA applied, 4894 accepted). The implication is 26% of RD applicants were accepted. The wait-list % is a whopping 52% of (RD applications plus EA applications less EA acceptance).

But they won’t know a majority of EA commitals until May 1st, and RD offers are made March 20. ???

They probably have a way to extrapolate interest level this cycle vs previous experience. They have been sending a fair number of emails, greetings etc since my son’s acceptance. They are also sending notices about acceptance weekend schedules that are going be held between Feb and April. I suppose for those who are not interested anymore wouldn’t click on the emails (at least as frequently) or schedule the weekend visits. Plus there will be some accepted in EA are being ED’ed as well. Case keeps one of the largest wait-list around, this will be a significant pool of applicants that can draw to manage the fall enrollment.

Since my D completed her update form this weekend, it’s now out of her hands! Hoping for the best.

I have known about three kids on waitlists at Case who called the admissions office immediately, expressed a lot of interest on the phone, and got right in with merit scholarships, but they had to almost promise they would say yes to any offer to get that, although not really obligated as I understand it. That was some years ago now. A waitlist at Case is not the same as a waitlist at many other colleges, because calling admissions may be possible to show interest, and at other colleges they call you, you don’t call them, when on a waitlist, in general, although thats a broad sweeping generalization based on three waitlists my sons were on (Pomona College, Vanderbilt U, and Carnegie Mellon University ) Sometimes a waitlist slot at Case means they thought the student was not interested for some reason, but still had the stats to get in, but may be in an “overcrowded major”. . Clearly a student who applies EA is somewhat more interested than the average kid who uses Case as a safety in the old days. My sense is Case needs to round out its class and does not want half premeds and half computer science majors, so majors other than that will have some luck I bet. Case does not restrict any major so
it may be good to say one is undecided rather than write a lot about wanting to be a doctor or computer scientist. I am not on the Case Western Admissions team, just my own thoughts, from watching these threads.

I believe case is a single door policy, I don’t see how declaring major will affect admission.
Given Case begins to require application fee this year, I wonder how it affects application. From everything I read, it seems that the number of applicants increased.

@Coloradomama A deferral EA is not the same thing as being waitlisted RD.

@annamom, no school, not Case or any school, wants a class of all premeds. So of course Case and any school reserves the right to diversify the class by MAJOR. (and race, and geography and talents like music, or art )

@TomSrOfBoston A lot of people on this list will have children who are waitlisted. Sorry but thats the way it goes now with Case Western. all the kids I refer there are getting waitlisted. Its going to happen to quite a few, but its not the end of the world, if a student is really interested they can call and maybe get in. Thats what I have observed in the past. Deferral is just more waiting, but a waitlist also is not a reject, at Case. Its going to get tougher to get in, as the school gains in popularity.

The best bet for parents and students is to keep a range of schools that will fit the student and not over focus on Case Western or Harvard! So with Case, U of Rochester may be almost the same for some kids, its not identical but close.
Find a list of schools that work, and do not over focus on any one.

@coloradomama If a student is waitlisted RD acceptance is related to how far they are from meeting their target class size. If the target is met or they are overenrolled no one will get off the waitlist. This is a thread about deferrals.

Year to year can vary for how soon a school fills their class.

Its unlikely that no one will get off the Case Western waitlist this year. I already know a few kids who got in EA and will turn them down. Thats normal. Yields are up but that far up, I bet. Many students will turn down Case Western for less expensive options. Most schools do order up their waitlist, and keep calling until they reach a student, who says they want to see the offer and then that offer is extended. They may try to get a commitment on the phone even. Its not an easy spot to be in, but it could work out. There is usually less than a week or even just two days to think over the offer, and then money needs to be sent to hold the spot.

For waitlisted students–
We have found that if a student does not answer their phone between May 2 and May 6, they may miss that call.
Colleges may not leave messages ,but just call the next student on the list , trying to fill the seat.

There is no predicting how far Case will be from their target right now, but some EA admitted students may call and pull out early that also happens every year to students I know. Some withdraw early as their favorite state program took them and they have to get a housing deposit submitted in February. (to big public programs with not enough housing ) That happens a lot out here, kids withdraw so they don’t have to think about it anymore. Also RD students can and do withdraw early, or just say no by May 1st.

So have some hope.

You can get back your deposit?

Case required an application fee this year?

^^yes.

Oh my son had an offer for a waiver. So they send waivers out to some kids?

I thought everybody got an application fee waiver.

Is there a word limit on the short answer on the application update form?
