Is it harder to get into CW for early action? I have a 4.0 AP and dual credit courses 35 ACT. Active in EC’s, volunteering and a part time job.
It’s probably because you’re a high stats student. Some colleges see students like you and automatically conclude that you wouldn’t go there. And colleges care about their yield rate. Good luck!
Yes it seems much harder this year to get into CWRU under early action, because there is a binding early decision program now, those students promise to attend and withdraw all other applications. There are two rounds of binding early decision at CWRU, but only one has admitted students by now. So less students get in today under non binding early action. Also Case needs to diversify majors some, so if you are looking at a premedical major, computer science, biomedical engineering, that could be another reason you were deferred, there are so many students looking to major i those subjects right now. It was a very hard round of EA this year, if you look at self reported scores on CC of those that got into CWRU so far this year.
Why do you feel you are a match to Case Western? Write to your admissions counselor and explain why its
a good fit for you.
Case is a great match for students who want to double major in music, as they are an arts focused schools as well.
If you have interest in business, mention that too. The business programs are strong.
Its a small and selective school now, and you may want to really think about why you fit there, to be sure you do fit there.
This year, admissions told two high school guidance counselors from two different schools that their EA admittance went down to approx 33%. This means 2/3 of applicants weren’t accepted. All the applicants I know had 31-36 act level scoring, were approx 3.8-4.0 unweighted gpa students, so that is the pool who got accepted and the pool who got denied. And only 1/3 got in. Never can know the exact whys of any of the schools admissions but I have seen many 36 and 35 act students denied from other high ranking schools like Georgetown & Vanderbilt in the past. Case is a selective school and only gaining in their ability to be selective. I don’t think this is acknowledged enough. We can all speculate on whys of getting accepted or deferred or denied, but won’t have answers. All I know is many many accepted students have high scores and when they look to balance out the class we cannot know what holds the most weight. Hoping all these kids find a school they feel at home at and can thrive. It’s such a difficult process for these poor kids and parents!
What did you do to “show interest” in CWRU?
My son wrote a letter to Case, will have his GC call and will follow up next week. He is interested in electrical and computer engineering and is also an avid reader of philosophy, history and great works of literature. He didn’t get a sense of what he wanted in a college until he visited Case. as of showing interest …He spoke to their rep in depth at every college fair and visited and had an interview.
@ambkeegan Sounds like a good plan. There isn’t much more your son could do. I have found GC calling the school been much more helpful, especially if the school is well known to the particular university. I have read stories about massive surges in application numbers for some schools, especially in the NE region. CW it is ranking pretty high vs the acceptance rate (esp.EA rates in the past) PLUS no supplement essay probably attract a lot of applications and the school can become very selective. This could be the situation here. That said, at least in past couple of yrs, CW maintain a very large waiting list (easily 40% of the total # of applicants), and about 10% of those from the accepted waitlist will get the final acceptance. There is still good prospects for the high stats defer to get a second look once all the applications are in, and the school can build a class around the specific majors. I know a couple of kiddos from my son’s school also got the defer from CW, and they seem to be ballpark like my S. College admissions been a crazy journey, filled with anxiety and unpredictability, and I think it will work out for most, you just never know what opportunities will make available even in the event of a “denial” decision. My S was rejected by his top school (ranking 40 spts lower than CW), which we foolishly let him to do that with ED round. We were so scared when we got the rejection, but it all worked out a week later with CW and UMich. You just never know, keep the faith, and good luck.
@ambkeegan it does sound like he is a fit at Case Western. Its is a bit of an agonizing long wait, so try to put it out
of your mind for a good two months if you can. Case offers a freshman book to read, and pretty in depth philosophy department. The Indian Philosophy class is amazing, and there are some strong humanities professors with U of Chicago degrees there. Students wait listed have gotten into Case. Your son is better off than waitlisted by far, he is still in the running for a seat. Also help him find another school that would work, on his list. I am sure he will get into many. Just reviewing the pros of other schools can help the time pass.
Here is the philosophy professor’s webpage, at CWRU. He has some interesting video footage on his webpage, and
he is a curator of art at Cleveland Art Museum as well.

Check your email if you haven’t. My D got a “keeping in touch” email from CWRU yesterday explaining the deferral in more detail and next steps. Best of luck to those who really want Case.
Yes we received that email too
Yes, we also received that email. Accepted at 5 other schools, deferred by his first choice.
My son has a rule, “Never wait in line to give someone your money.” I find this hilarious. We’ll wait and see if he breaks his own rule. I’m guessing we’ll give them until the end of February.
@CollegeGuy2018 , CWRU decisions come out March 20th. Hilarious kid, good luck!
@CollegeGuy2018 It is annoying and a little off-putting, to be deferred, but not the end of world. Might as well not cut off your nose to spite your face. March 20 will be here in a blink of the eye, why not wait and see?
What if the CWRU scholarship is better or if he will find his best mentor at Case Western? Applying binding ED
might be the way to go for those that really know CWRU is their first choice. Case is worth waiting for. It is more personal, than some schools out there and the professors will work hard to help with graduate school apps, if thats the goal.
Thanks. I will encourage him to wait. We’ve visited CW twice and he does love the campus. We’ll need to see if waiting 20+ days into March will affect his place in line for housing at his 2nd choice. We’re investigating that process now and will try to keep the CW door open as long as we can.
Like your son, @collegeguy2018 , my D visited campus on 2 different official events and then went back a 3rd time for the optional admissions interview. The deferral was a real bummer. However, I am trying to be objective. If many EA kids are deferred, this gives CWRU the chance to see if the deferred kids commit to an ED school or a different EA school. And some will. If they were deferred, then Case just helped their numbers by not officially accepted these kinds of kids. Then, those who are really interested and still available and who were deferred, will fill out the email form that is coming soon, will continue to update and show true interest, and will hopefully be admitted. Best of luck. We are in the same boat, but my D currently only has 1 acceptance. All others come at the end of March/early April. And my D was deferred from her ED school, so maybe Case sensed something correctly with my D’s stats/gpa/Common App. However, she is still available to them and is still very interested in them!
@CollegeGuy2018 You can put a deposit on the 2nd choice school for housing and get it back before May 1. That presure to deposit is psychological…if you put a deposit it helps “anchor” that school as one you would go to …but you can ask for the deposit back before May 1 and then put one down on Case
Hi Everybody, I see they squeaked in an optional essay on the deferred update form - more writing for the kids!
Thank You everyone for the encouraging words. Case is 1.5 hours away vs his 2nd choice that is 5hrs away.
@Winky1 that’s a great second chance to differentiate the kiddo from the rest of the pile. After gone through over 25 apps for my 3 kiddos, I treat none of these"optional" essays as optional. Write something which you allow the Case AO to talk about for the “PS” line in the letter of acceptance, I think it is very important. My S “PS” line is very personal (nothing about academic stats but character, struggles he made thru), and it really sold us that the AO read the whole file and picked out the personal element as to why they accept him during the EA round.
