Deferred ED

William and Mary will accept any updated scores, awards, achievements, etc. you want to share with them. They usually go into committee in March. January scores should reach them in time if you send them when results come out. Also, go over your Common Application one more time and see if there is anything you may not have included. Maybe there are activities or circumstances you did not put down or have a chance to elaborate on, in that case send in an email. I am only suggesting you do this if you believe it makes a difference. As far as testing is concerned this will also help your application not only to W&M but other colleges you are applying.

It does not hurt to contact W&M to find out the reason. Either you or your guidance counselor can call. They may or not may not give you a specific reason. Please understand you probably were competitive in the applicant pool. Look at my initial post for this thread. My S got into other wonderful schools. Believe it or not we are instate. He sent in additional information and test scores. They are building a class and it just was not to be for him. I get this is not easy right now, believe me I get it. My S had been through a lot in his life and his essay was a cathartic experience for him. It was not easy to be ‘deferred’ and then again ‘waitlisted’ from a college he really wanted to attend. But, he knows that is life. Bottom line is know in your heart and mind you have a lot to offer other colleges and make sure you share that on all of your applications. Write really great essays that truly pertain to your life as you answer the prompts and questions.

Another long-time W&M poster has stated they were deferred ED and then got in, so know there is hope. They stated about 10% do get in from ED during the RD round. So send in your updated information. My best to you as you work through this process.

You are welcome to call us regarding your decision however, because our process is so holistic and considers so many factors, we may not be able to give you an exact reason. If you’re looking for profile information, 80% of last year’s entering class graduated in the top 10% of their classes and mid 50% range on SATs was 1280-1430 (Critical Reading + Math) overall (for OOS it’s generally 1380-1430). If you take the January exam we will likely be able to consider your new scores assuming they arrive in February however you should also email your regional dean when those new scores become available so we can ensure they’re considered.

In ED we admitted about 50%, deferred 30%, and denied 20% as another poster already noted.

^Just want to say that of all the college forums I’ve been on, you (W&M Admission) are the only one who visits and posts responses regularly. It sets you apart. Good job staying in touch with new ways to exchange of information.

William & Mary and the University of Virginia do a great job of answering questions and filling in the gaps on CC. They are to be commended for taking the time to do this with all they have going on during this time of year. They also have great blogs to broadly explain topics or give valuable information. We are very fortunate in Virginia to have college admission offices that go the extra for the students whom are applying. If you have not checked out the William & Mary blogs I strongly recommend it. Wendy Livingston and others in the W&M admissions office do a fantastic job!

Class of 2015 and woosah, thanks for the shout outs! We’re here to help students as much as we can. We got into this line of work because we love working with students. CC is a great forum for students to air out their concerns in a safe environment and we want to meet students where they feel comfortable.

Glad you like the blogs too. We enjoy writing them and are glad you enjoy reading them!

Absolutely - and fortunate, too, that VA offers such a variety of fine state universities. W&M and UVA, of course - but also V Tech, JMU, Mary Washington, George Mason, and more. (With 4 feet of snow on the ground in the last week alone, I’m wondering - again - just why we live in New York …)

I agree, all of the institutions you mentioned are all a testament to the wonderful VA Public College System.

We agree. The Virginia public college system is very broad, diverse and provides a lot of different options for the many different students we serve here in the Commonwealth.

There does some to be an awful lot of love among the Virginia public schools. Like siblings, mostly competing for bragging rights, sharing in each other’s ups and downs. Probably because they’re mostly full of Virginia residents who went to HS and graduated with students at all the other schools.

My daughter was deferred ED and just received an email asking her for missing financial aid forms, does this mean she was possibly accepted or do they do they review everyones financial aid whether admitted or denied? Thanks

They do everyone’s, it doesn’t mean she’s accepted, just that they want a complete application during regular decision review.

Just curious, what was your son’s GPA/test scores? @woosah
