I was recently deferred from NC State after applying early action from the 2015-2016 year. My first choice of major was first year college and my second was political science. Prior to being deferred, my UW GPA was 3.4/W 3.9, SAT score was 1740, and ACT was 28. Now after my first semester of my senior year, my GPA went up to 3.6/4.1. I did not retake any tests because my counselor advised me not to, but I regret this… I lack extra curriculars besides some volunteer work as well as my part time job, but explained this in one of the short answers asking if there was anything hindering me from participating in extra curriculars due to my mother being a single mom. As for my personal statement, I wrote about my father’s passing affecting my personality and driving me to become successful. NC State is the only school I want to go to, and I worry about getting in every day. What are my chances like? It seems like their admissions process is so random. Also, would it help if I wrote a deferral letter explaining how it’s my first choice school and how hard I worked this past semester to improve my chances of getting in? I just want to know if there’s anything I could still do to help myself. Thank you!
I don’t know your chances (maybe move this to the chance page), but I do hope you applied to other schools. This may not be what you want to hear but IMO nobody should get so stuck on one school that it is the only place he/she can see his/herself. The admissions process is inexact and nobody can be certain of gaining admission to any one school (unless perhaps he/she is a recruited athlete or the parents endowed a building or two on campus). I’d suggest looking at your other choices with a fresh eye – there are a tremendous number of great colleges and universities out there where one can get a wonderful education and have a great experience. Good luck.
Accepted to First Year College
In State
GPA: 4.03/3.3
Class Rank: 89/476
SAT: 1740
ACT: 28
Courses: All honors and AP with an art class each year
Extracurriculars: only a part time job, but I wrote a mini essay about how I was limited due to my mother being a single parent and I having to baby sit my younger sister the majority of high school.
I was deferred from early decision, and my GPA went up after my first semester. I think showing signs of improvement and my test scores are what got me in.
