Is it possible to get deferred from M&T and still get in to your second choice ED? I got deferred from M&T ED, but it doesn’t say anything about the second-choice. Does that mean that mean Wharton chose to defer me or did they have no choice because M&T did? Or was I rejected from M&T and deferred from Wharton?
@EDnotRD what does your letter say exactly? If it says that you got deferred from M&T, then i think this means that they will consider you for M&T again during RD and if you don’t get in they will consider you for Wharton (again during RD).
my letter said they just deferred my application: I was wondering about this too, whether I would just be considered for SEAS RD or whether I would have a chance for M&T again (and if so how much of a chance)
"Thank you for your application to the University of Pennsylvania. After careful deliberation, the selection committee has deferred a decision on your application until March 31, 2016. Because your application will now be considered under the terms of our Regular Decision Program, you are released from the binding agreement of Early Decision.
"
You are deferred by both M&T and your 2nd choice. During the regular round, you will be considered for M&T first, and then the 2nd choice.
@f2000sa that is what I would think but I am hearing conflicting things. Can you confirm this for sure?
according to other ccers, here’s what the faq for deferred applicants says:
" If I applied to a Coordinated Dual-Degree, Accelerated, or Specialized Program,
will my application be considered again for both the Coordinated Dual-Degree,
Accelerated, or Specialized Program and the single-degree school I selected?
Yes. Your application will be considered in Regular Decision for both the Coordinated DualDegree,
Accelerated, or Specialized program and your single-degree option.
Nope, you are deferred only from M&T. Your app didnt even go to your second choice
If you had indicated that your second choice was ED also, then you were considered for your second choice already and deferred from that. If you didn’t make your second choice binding, then I don’t think it was considered.
@desie1 This is an email I got from the Associate Director of M&T
Dear Shau***,
Thank you for your interest in the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology!
The single degree school, in your case Wharton, does not review any M&T applications unless we make a decision to deny an applicant. If your application to M&T is deferred to regular decision, Wharton will not review your application unless we do not admit. If admitted to M&T or Wharton in regular, the decision is non-binding. Please note that we do not always defer candidates from early to regular, though it does happen occasionally.
Best,
Jaime
@ShaunakK98 Wow - I have never seen that before except if someone choses to not be bound to their single choice ED. Thanks for sharing.
You must have been REALLY close to getting admitted to M&T because, from what I understand, they usually decide “no” and then drop it down to your single choice. I don’t think your case is that typical - and they actually state in your letter that it “happens occasionally.” And you did say you would apply to Wharton ED if you weren’t picked for M&T, right?
I already heard of a few students who were admitted to their single choice after not getting the dual degree choice.
So don’t give up even though you must be so disappointed. Let Penn know about any accomplishments/awards you earn this year. And make sure they know they are still your first choice. Good luck!
Penn only admitted 115 students across all majors from the deferred list last year
@desie1 I think I wasnt too clear…this was an email I received a few weeks ago, when I emailed them asking about dual degree deferrals!
However, thank you so much for your kind words I am 95% sure though that I have been deferred from M&T and not Wharton.
I selected the single degree as non-binding. How do you tell if you were rejected from M&T and deferred because your single degree will be decided RD anyways or whether you were straight deferred from M&T?
