Deferred from Tulane

Extremely consistent this year and last year. High stat students that show no interest are getting deferred.

Congrats on an excellent high school record, doctorwho. I am sure you will get into any number of the schools to which you applied. Which one is your “dream” school?

Thank you!

Stanford and Rice, probably. I hear back from Northeastern tomorrow, which gives full tuition for being a National Hispanic Scholar, so that’s a major contender. It’s all a matter of finances at this point.

It is very hard to turn down full tuition!! We speak from experience. Best of luck.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments and advice. My daughter decided to withdraw the application.

Thanks fallenchemist for your thoughtful comments and advice. My daughter decided to withdraw the application.

I am sure I speak for many in saying we wish her the very best of luck wherever she ends up ebhelper. Does she have a favorite?

My daughter still hasnt heard and everyone else she knows who applied ea heard a while ago. I don’t remember her asking about a Why Tulane Essay. So now I am more concerned. She visited in September, met with 2 department chairs, attended 2 classes, met with admissions and took the tour. We love in NJ. It was an effort to do all that. What reason could there be?

First a deferral from Duke, now from one of my safety schools… I’ve lost all hope.

Doctorwhofan I think we were deferred for the same reason

2210 SAT, 3.786 GPA, lots of extracurriculars and leadership, 10 AP’s (all 4s and 5s), SAT II 770 Math II and 630 Lit, Hispanic

Kinda disappointed because and I feel like I have no chance at Penn, Vandy, and Duke RD. Though, I didn’t write the Why Tulane essay and I think that showed a lack of interest.

@Urstruly same here. Even though Tulane wasn’t my top choice, it was my number 2 and I did show lots of interest (I went all the way down there in October, met my Admissions Rep, and wrote a strong “why Tulane” essay). They didn’t even know they were my #2 haha. After getting deferred from my ED (hence my username), I’m just so surprised. Tulane is usually very generous with my school and some of the kids accepted this year were obvious slackers and even had disciplinary records!! I’m a very strong student with solid EC’s, although my scores are a little low but not low enough to explain the deferral considering the kids from my school usually get in with even lower stats. Fortunately I was accepted pre-med to Pitt so I do have options, but I really have no interest in any other schools! it is definitely the worst feeling.

urstruly - Even though Tulane’s SAT scores and GPA stats may be lower than other schools (like Duke, Vandy, Rice), it’s really not a good choice as a “safety” just because of the number of apps and the admission rate. If you want to choose a true safety school, pick one with about a 60% admission rate where you are above the 75th percentile in scores. And hopefully they have a nice honors program.

UMdeferred - If UMich appeals to you, you might like UW-Madison. I think they have rolling admissions, so the wait might not be so bad.

Make that three. Heartsick. Daughter did two (2) community service projects in Lower Ninth Ward (one as part of Katrina/tornado relief in NOLA and Alabama), toured campus during one of those visits, and her “Why Tulane” essay screamed out that Tulane was her first choice. She has solid grades (top 20 percent at highly regarded HS in Boston area), is captain of tennis team, member of Nat’l Honor Society and has other great ECs and service.

does anyone know how many people usually get in after being deferred? and when they hear?

@nova2nola- UM=miami haha. i was going to apply to Mich EA but tbh I hate cold weather too much and im looking for medium schools w/ big d1 sports and strong pre-med program (aka Pitt, minus the weather/size)

UMdeferred - I should’ve realized that, since Miami and Tulane have so much overlap! Wisconsin would definitely be somewhat colder! Good luck with your remaining college decisions - hope it’s all good news!

@nova2nola I thought of it as more of a match but when slackers in my school started getting in I thought I was guaranteed in lol. However, little did I know those slackers were legacy with $$$ and had been keeping contact with the admissions officer since freshman year.

Urstruly - ouch, that hurts. The admissions process, like life, is often unfair. But in spite of that, it does seem to work out somehow for the vast majority of people, even if not as planned. Best of luck to you! And as they say, “Bloom where you are planted.”

DS deferred today for Tulane :frowning: An even bigger surprise that he was deferred is that they wanted to see his first trimester transcripts…this is a kid who is a NMSF, 33 ACT, 4.1 GPA, all AP courses in science/math and language, tons of strong leadership EC’s…he honestly was shocked. Kind of thought he would be ‘guaranteed’. Thank goodness he’s already in at Wisconsin (his back up plan school).

We’ll wait to see on his #1 choice on Monday with snail mail, and then see if we make a plan of attack for ED on #1A choice. He’s decided he’s not going to let this get him down.

McMomma–Wisconsin is a stellar school…my cousin is a professor of biology there (and also a gradaute).

With his stats and smarts and leadership, he will definitely bloom wherever he is planted. I know he must be shocked by this deferral, but so glad he’s decided to not let it get him down.

I just got my decision letter today saying I was deferred; definitely had me very worried… I would love to go to Tulane, but I will admit I considered it a safety/backup school (GPA 4.4W/3.9 UW, 2230 SAT, top 1% of class). I had gone and visited last spring and decided to apply before I knew about the free application. I made a fatal mistake in not writing the “Why Tulane” essay! Fingers crossed for RD I guess :/

Hopefully this is the case where I didn’t show enough interest and not that I wasn’t a strong applicant

Well of course you are a strong student, but by not showing interest you were not a strong applicant. As you imply, there are schools you hope to attend more than Tulane. Best of luck. Are any of them ED?
