Deferred from U of Michigan?

Hi, just looking for an opinion here.

I graduated this year and am currently taking a gap year, and plan to go to college in fall of 2010. I applied to various schools, including Uni. of Michigan. U of M is the best looking school on my list right now, and i honestly wasn't expecting to get in. I recieved my letter today saying i had been deferred, and i was wondering what my chances might be at this point. I will be in Guatemala City for the next half year (starting january) volunteering as a teacher's aid for poor kids, so i'm trying to get as much planning done for next fall as i can right now. I was expecting to get straight up denied and make plans for CMU, but then i got this. My stats:

3.3 GPA cumulative unweighted
27 ACT
300+ hours of community service
two fantastic essays (my forte)
two good letters of recommendation
two AP courses, four years of foreign language, lots of honors courses. 4 years of all four academic area courses (english, math, social studies and science)

TLDR I'd love to go to U of M but i want to know if i have any chance at this point. Thanks!

ECs are only considered in admission at UMich. You are in the bottom 25% for scores and grades. From a UMich application perspective you would be better off spending the time practicing the ACT or SAT which are weighted more heavily than ECs. You’ll only compete marginally better at CMU.
